I know there's an official name for this: The metal plate that goes on the outside of a door, having a round hole for the handle and a keyhole.

A hardware store guy told me it's a "push plate." Is that the real name?

I have about 12 old ones, very decorative, which I want to sell, but I'd sure like to call them by their right names. . . .

A push plate is generaly used on a door with a deadbolt. A push plate will have no holes of any kind just a solid rectangular piece of metal.
I'm not a 100% sure with out looking it up and I have nothing available to referance, but I think you would be safe in calling it a Trim Plate or Bezel.

I think I know this because I just had a door replaced. They are called backplates.

Do they look like this?

Actually the correct term is "escutcheon."
