I bought a Mavica FD73 about 3 years ago and use it constantly for my auction pictures. The past few months I have noticed that the pictures come out too dark when I load them on the computer. They look fine on the camera, tho. I changed the little disk battery to see if that helped, but it didn't make any difference. Anybody else have this problem...anybody know what might be wrong? Thanks in advance for your input.

I bought mine about 3 yrs ago also and so far I haven't had any problems. I love the camera and use it almost daily.
Maybe you can find some help at this site. Good luck.

I have one idea for you. That happened to me one week and I finally noticed a sliding lever on the left side of the back of the camera, (the other side from the lens and front)--the working side for me. This lever slides back and forth and causes the picture to come out darker or lighter. That fixed the problem for me--it had inadvertently been slid over to the darker setting. Now that I know it's there, I've actually used it on occasion to my advantage!
Yes, I still love my Mavica. The ease of use with the floppy disk makes it all worthwhile.

I had the exact same problem. I even sent it back to Sony and they said there was nothing wrong with it???? I ended up having to buy a new camera and discovered there aren't many out there that use a floppy disc. I bought an FD100 and am very happy with it although it has a few more bells and whistles on it than I need. The 73 Model is not available anymore - the FD 100 was the only Sony I could find that used the floppy disc. I think floppies must be on the way out.

I love my FD-73.
Don't forget that when you remove the battery for charging and put it back the EV level will reset to zero.
I usually set the exposure on mine to +1.0

I have been wondering the same thing as capotasto. Whenever I have my battery out to recharge it, the EV level goes back to zero. I usually have mine set at 1.5. It probably depends on your lighting. Look at that setting and tell us if that works.

I want to thank everybody for their responses. I have messed around with the settings and nothing seems to help. Once in a while I will get a really good picture, so I'm thinking it all has to do with the lighting (I must live in a cave). I've even noticed that sometimes if I just move the camera a fraction of a bit the picture on the LCD screen changes in lighting and focus. I don't change the EV settings because I've never noticed that there was any change in my pictures. Same for the Fine setting. I'll keep messing with it to see if I can get it right. Thanks all!

YES, I still love my Mavica! It sounds like you have your backlite set too bright on the camera. Darken it till what you see on the camera matches what you see on the computer screen. Then set your exposure + till you get the picture you want. I wouldn't trade my Mavica for any of the new mega-pixel cameras. It's great for eBay!!
Despite the high cost of living, it remains popular

I bought a Mavica 10X about a year ago after a friend told me about it. However I have had no luck getting my clothing pictures to come out bright enough. The images after they are on my computer look grainy and too dark. My closeups come out great but not farther away ones.
Since I have so much trouble with it, I keep going back to my Epson however I have to upload each image onto my computer which takes forever.
I just wish I could figure out what i am doing wrong, it would be so much quicker.

What type of memory does the epson use? No matter, If you have a USB port (they might even make a paralell modle, but probably not)Get a Dazzle Card reader. It reads/accepts all 5 types of camera memory. I just have the reader plugged into a USB port, then I incert the card, and the computer reads it as another drive. I created a shortcut to that drive on my desktop, as well as a shortcut to a folder called Incoming Photos. I go to the drive folder for the card reader, hit edit, select all, and drag the photo files to the folder shortcut and the pictures are in my computer!
I find most camera software very cumbersom and user unfriendly. The Dazzle reader sells for about $40 but I believe I recently saw it on sale at Gateway for around $20.

I don't change the EV settings because I've never noticed that there was any change in my pictures. Same for the Fine setting.
The exposure compensation does make a difference. (So does the Fine setting.) Keep experimenting by increasing the exposure before you take a pic.
I don't recall how the FD-73/75 works, but on most cameras you hold the shutter button down halfway to automatically set the focus/exposure. Hold the shutter button down halfway, wait for 1/2 second or so without releasing, then press the shutter button down all the way. You may be snapping the pic too quickly.
I just picked up a 10X optical zoom Olympus C-700. This camera is a dream come true. Lots of manual adjustments, including exposure compensation, shutter speed, aperture, etc. (Of course there's a completely automatic setting for cameraphobes.) The C-700 is going on clearance to make way for the new 720 so you can get it for a couple of hundred bucks off.
(The little dots on the leaf are two bugs, which you can clearly see in the full-sized image.)

Here's an interesting pic. It's from our local children't theater production of Princess and the Pea this weekend.
No flash, ISO400 (slow shutter speed) and full optical zoom. The picture came out fuzzy (it's hard to hold this puppy still for the slower shots.) The exposure and color tone came out well. Anyway, it's my first attempt at low lighting.

The Mavica is still doing the job for me...I'm just a little disappointed in the ever-weakening battery. Seems it won't hold a charge for very long anymore. I've heard this is a known problem with the Mavica battery. Oh well!

I have an FD-83 and LOVE it, can not imagine doing ebay without it. To think that I used to scan what I could, and not everything could be scanned of course - I can not even contemplate doing this without it.

I love my FD-73 Sony mavica. I DO NOT have to reset the EV when I change the battery. I keep it at +1.5 I have had mine close to 3 years with no problems.
