I have definately seen a drop in what I have sold since mention has been made of going to war. I have also seen gasoline prices sky rocket yet again, not to mention heating fuel. People are having to spend so much money on the necessities of life right now that there's not much left for buying luxuries. I could come right out and say how I feel about our president and his plans for war, but I'm afraid I might be arrested for exercising my right to free speech.

I was in high school during Vietnam and had an uncle who served over there. I remember what that time was like and I have no desire to see the repeat. War does not improve the economy, it devistates it. Only after the smoke has cleared do we see an improvement. I for one, cannot afford any of this. I don't sell on Ebay because I like spending every free moment of my time taking pictures, writing descriptions and the like. I do it because I need the money.

I applaud your stand!

JACK ROCKS! I lost five friends to that thing called Nam. And I lost three more to 9-11. I still say this is a stupid attempt at revenging Daddy. If there were truly our freedom at stake, I would go myslf. This country needs the economy fixed not lives sacrificed for oil.

Goodmorning Jack,

Your topic has brought me here twice in the last 5 mins, and I am having a battle with myself as weather to respond with my feelings or respond with facts.

First Jack I would like the say Thank You for being one of the men, of many, who have
helped keep our Great Country Free!
From what I see is if we all stay in our own backyards, and stick with our agreement there would be no need for WAR! We all Love
our freedom, but we would not have Freedom NOW..........if it wasn't for Men like you Jack.

Yes, I have to agree with you about Hits on Ebay, and Sales being Down, way down........talk of War has effected Ebay in many ways. For over 4 years of Selling here this is the first time that I have seen very little or no action on my auctions. Yes, the talk of War has effected Sales on Ebay and it is to the little guy that the drop is felt.

Here in NYC, we are hurting with loose, sadness, pain and suffering from 911 and it was in my own home that all this has attacked. .......Lets not forget 911 and the reason it happened and why ALL of us are having mixed feelings.

Here's the lyrics and you can bet that when I go to see "THE BOSS" in Atlantic City this March, I'm gonna be singing n shouting right along!!

War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
War is something that I despise
For it means destruction of innocent lives
For it means tears in thousands of mothers' eyes
When their sons go out to fight to give their lives

War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again
War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing

War
It's nothing but a heartbreaker
War
Friend only to the undertaker
War is the enemy of all mankind
The thought of war blows my mind
Handed down from generation to generation
Induction destruction
Who wants to die

War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again
War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing

War has shattered many young men's dreams
Made them disabled bitter and meanLife is too precious to be fighting wars
each day
War can't give life it can only take it away

War
It's nothing but a heartbreaker
War
Friend only to the undertaker
Peace love and understanding
There must be some place for these things today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord there's gotta be a better way
That's better than
War

War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again
War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing

Marvin Gaye ~

Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today - Ya

Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today

So what's the answer? There's never going to peace on earth but those madmen have to be stopped

I agree gina. War is not like it used to be as proven in Desert Storm. We will always have the threat of terriorism if it isn't stopped. Next time it might be in your neighborhood.

I do notice that ebay has been down but with the kind of buyers that we are getting maybe that is for the good. I can't remember people talking like this 3-4 years ago. We as sellers put on the best items we can, then we get a bidder that doesn't feel like they have to go through with the transactions. If this was in the real world of buying something could be done but on eBay it is just another negative in an otherwise horrible feedback.

This is probably a stupid comment but I feel impelled to make it. I had friends that were a few years older than I and in high school. I remember for one entire year, the flag at the school was down at half mast. The reason: there were students that were either drafted or quit school to join the army and were killed in Viet Nam. I will never forget that as long as I live.

paloma - that is not stupid at all...it's very touching

I usually try to steer away from conversations such as this, since everyone is very passionate about why they feel the way they do.

I go back and forth on the issue. I come from a strong military background - my father is retired USAF. Unfortunately there are people that don't understand anything but force, pretty or not.

It breaks my heart to think that we will possibly be sending loved ones to fight yet another war, and I don't like it anymore than the next person...definitely not on my list of priorities; however, I viewed the Daniel Pearl video and it changed my views on a lot of things.

Maybe one day we will have peace for our children, if not for us...

War is good for killing our young men and women. I too remember Nam and how many boys and men were killed and it settled absolutely nothing! I truly broke and still breaks my heart to think of how many died and were diabled defending the politics of a presidents pride. Kennedy was advised to send troops over so it would look good on his political record and look where it ended.
However, can we stand by and just let anyone kill our citizens because they don't like our beliefs? Go tell the idiot who started this that war is hell. We can't be bullied around and say ok thats ok if you kill private citizens just because you hate our country. It was an act of war when we were attacked on 9/11.
If we let this slide other enemies will think they can do anything they want and we will just stand by and do nothing to defend our country. And this has NOTHING to do with oil!!!! It is saying "You attack us and we won't lay down and take it".
Yes war is good for nothing but try to tell that to the countries that hate the US and want to destroy it. We still have most of our freedoms in this country but if old Ben whatever his name is has his way we will be dead soon in the name of ali! He wants to destroy us just because we don't believe in ali! Try to tell him about tolerance! Some of the movie stars who want to go over there and talk to him and bring peace have too much money and time on their hands to think he will ever listen. ALL he wants is to see us dead.
It is so strange people like him come over here to receive the best education in the world and enjoy our freedom then want to kill us because we are free. Talk about insanity!
I know many are unhappy with President Bush but should he say ok mr. Ben its ok if you kill more of our people we know it was a mistake to threaten you. This the real world and it is full of hate and most of the hate is directed at the US. Did you know that our former president was offered Benladden on a platter and he refused to do anything? He said he wasn't a threat to the US. This was after the first attempt of blowing up the trade center with the bomb in the basement.
Don't blame Bush for a war he didn't start! I'm sure he would rather not go to war either, who would other than idiots like Benladden. As long as this world is full of hate there will be wars. However in the next life it will be different. Life has many choices. Eternity has two. What's your choice?

Thank you for saying what I am feeling also, and I agree with everything your saying................. when its in our own back yard...........well that is just a big slap in the face..............One I personally will never forget or can Overlook.

Lots of forums I have been too all have mixed feelings of what is the best thing to do. But when you are personally effected by 911, you don't have to think of what is the best thing to do..................you know what you lost and what you want back, but you will never get it back.
But Freedom, im not about to let it go from my life without a fight..............

Wars in the past have given us what we enjoy today, Lets not forget that because if we do, all the boys died for no reason.

Let's not get the two wars mixed up.. War on Terrorism and the War with Iraq.
Saddam did not attack us. Yes, he is evil but no matter what you say, Bush is fighting his father's war. He started out saying he is fighting a war on Terrorism.. but what happened to that way??? Now he switches to Iraq.. Wouldn't you think N Korea is a much bigger threat.
Yes, the war with Iraq is about oil and to think otherwise is foolish.
Yes, we need to protect our country but we can't be running around the world throwing the idea of war around. We have enough enemies without acting like more of bully.
I visited some people in N. Ireland recently and they even have a growing hatred for the US in the way Clinton was always in their business with the fighting and bombing that is going on there all the time. I was amazed how much the US sticks it's nose in other's business.
But remember, the war on Terrorism isn't over and that is not why we are fighting with Iraq. Going to war on Iraq is not helping the victims of Sept. 11. It is a whole other war.

WAR is a ebay topic it is and will effect us all on ebay, on driving our cars, in germ warfare etc... No to mention our family members that may be lost to the insanity of the world.

Auctions stink and if you think it has nothing to do with the ecomony and the threat that we all know there will be a war soon your wrong. How will gas prices feel at 3.00 a gallon? Not to mention keeping your lights on, power for the computer can you afford it? I can't.
Less buyers on ebay... in all markets.

WAR stinks I understand we have to do something about 911 but is this truly it, I don't know I pray for the idoits to grow a brain in Iraq and stop this killing game.

No matter what it is vets like Jack that give us the freedom we have now, Thanks to all those vets now and those that will serve.

MIlitary personal shop on ebay do you think they will be shopping or fighting for us? Sales will get worse and worse.

Many good comments have been made here.

Yes, ebay sales were affected after 9/11 and the same thing happened for B&M stores. Sales slumped for many, including me.

All the talk of war makes people very uncomfortable. They will not be spending extra money if they are worried about whether they will have a job in the near future or if the cost of living will skyrocket. People are nervous.

As for the thread police who have taken the job of moderation upon themselves, who are you to dictate what thread belongs where?

This topic is related to ebay as the talk of war affects any of us that buy and sell.

It sure is related to ebay sales

You can bet once this war starts, most ebayers will be glued to their TV's watching CNN or MSNBC nightly news including myself

I rarely watch TV, most times on the computer doing my auctions and checking online for headlines but once this war starts, just like 9-11 ~ I will be glued to the TV

I like you Jack, so don't take this wrong

I see the anti war protests..... what I do not see is people SUPPORTING OUR troops.

Our sons, daughters, mothers, fathers and friends that are going off to this.

I for one, will support our service people, because I could just imagine what they are feeling, seeing Americans protesting this, and they are the ones going head long into it.

They signed up for this.....of course most didn't think they would ever actually think they would have to go do this... but that is what the military if for, and they realized that when they signed up.

The people that are in this for the U.S. are a voluntary military. There is no draft.

I support our troops, and we have people (young and older) that are close to us, that have already left.

I know I'll probably get slammed for this, but thats how I feel

I'm tired of hearing all of these whining appeasers complain about how the threat of war is hurting the economy.

How good will your ebay sales be if Iraq nukes the oil fields and brings the world economy to a screeching halt? Even the threat of nuking the world's oil supply (or Israel) will be enough to cause panic. How does $10 or $20 per gallon of gas sound? You'd better buy yourself a good pair of walking shoes.

With a democracy in Iraq, the oil supply will drastically increase which means cheaper oil which means a better economy for everyone. A democracy in Iraq will set an example for the rest of the Arab World and that will help us in the war on terror.

As a Gulf War vet, I know that war is bad. But it's usually the only way to get rid of a ruthless dictator.

The way I see it, we need to take care of this headache before it turns into something much worse. I'm glad that we have a president with the guts to do what needs to be done.

Near - I think that most people see the damage that was done with the Vietnam protests and the lack of support for the troups. I live in San Diego and we are shipping out men daily it seems (7 ships left last week, the most in 18 years). The overall feeling among people here is that although we disagree with the actions they may have to take, we support them as individuals completely. They are being sent into an action that knowing many of them, even they disagree with but this is the commitment that they have made and they are living up to it and for that, they deserve nothing but respect.

Saddam - if you think that Saddam wants to Nuke oil wells you are niave.
1) Kuwait was merely a bump in the trail to Saudi Arabia - the bain of the arab worlds existance. He's a nucase, he's viewed in the Arab world as a nut case and felt that if he could take over SA he could win respect - like I said - He ain't quite right.
2) OPEC and not rulers as individuals decide oil production levels. Irac could be ruled by a democratically elected official, a military dictator or Mighty Mouse - Oil production levels are decided by a group of representatives of the oil procuding nations in order to avoid a glut in the market and the devaluation of their product.
3) War is not neccessary to remove dictators. We are talking about someone who's father was CIA before becoming president. Do you really think he doesn't know how to funnel money, troops, and guns in to help launch an "uprising" or "coup"? George Sr lost re-election because he swore to get Saddam and failed. Now GW swore to get Bin Laden and is failing so he's playing slight of hand - Look what I am doing over here.. ignore the failures over there. This is not a necessary act - this is an entirely political act. The sad fat is, he's going to sacrifice our young men to try to ensure his re-election.

Well, I really think that anyone that would protest this war after 911 is an idiot. Sorry to be so blunt. The Muslim extremists' are hell bent on killing all Americans no matter what the cost. The simple fact is that if terrorists get a hold of weapons of mass destruction they will come from Iraq, Iran, or North Korea. It is insane to think that they won't use them if they get them. Anyone protesting this upcoming war puts our freedom and way of life at risk. BTW where were all these idiots when Clinton sent our troops to war in Eastern Europe in the late 90's. I just think it's typical liberal pit on group against the other propaganda. I can't understand why everything is so political with the left. Why can't they put their energy into solving problems rather than this destructiveness. After all how are you going feel if another attacks happens that is worse. This appeasement mentality got us Hitler, Stalin and the like.

I for one think that Bush is doing an outstanding job. Lining them and mowing them down. I would argue that we should not have sent the inspectors back in. We should have just jumped to phase 2 already.

Nuf - why exactly do you think that America is hated so much by the Muslim Extremists? It's not because we are not Muslim. There's not a lot of Muslims in South America either but you don't seem them being targetsed as "Infidels".

America and the Western World is hated for their interference and inferred interference in Muslim territories and lifestyle. Extremists resent the influx of Western lifestyle into their culture. They resent other nations telling them how to rule, how to live and how to interact with others and see it as an affront to their relious docrine (which they have taken to extremes).

I am not by any means defending extremeists however you have to understand that deciding that WE have the inherent right to rule the world is how we beaome the target of them, and it is how we will succeed only in creating more. The child that survives a bombing of his neighborhood when this action begins (which, yes, I have no doubt it will) will grow up to be the leader that points a weapon back at us later. We are not fighting our enemies, we are creating them

In other words.... do they REALLY understand what is going on, other than what their liberal parents or teachers tell them... are they hearing EVERYTHING..are they hearing BOTH sides? Do they fully understand that if this WAS like 'Nam they would be drafted and off like our VOLUNTEERS?

It is a sad reality that there is evil in this world. Nobody wants war, but it is unfortunately necessary in some situations, as freedom does not come free. It has a cost and must be fought for and defended when challenged.

The Muslim Extremists of the world has made a decision to unite and challenge our very way of life. Their plans invision a purist and radical form of their religion worldwide at the expense of all other's safety and freedom. Their means of accomplishing their mission are transparent, ruthless, without boundries and dangerous and it is up to us to fight our enemies, not to back down and pretend that they do not exist. The only way to accompish this task is by force, as diplomacy alone cannot reach this objective.

Our Country is soon to make the tough and correct decision to remove the reckless and dangerous leadership stronghold from Iraq. Once successful, this Country and the World will be a better place. It is a difficult decision to take such action, but the cost of inaction is much greater than action. All one has to do is invision this same situation with Iraq having nuclear capabilties and it will be clear that the time to remedy this problem is NOW.

It is time for us all to pray for and support our troops, not to second guess their or our Government's actions.

I think, or at least I really want to believe, that people learned their lesson. The men that fight the war are very different from the men that create the war. I think people have learned that you can disagree with the action without disgreeing with the man.

As for those that think that liberals will be victimizing those that return, you are not up on the current liberal arguement. War victimizes miniroties and low income become this is what our military is predominately made up of (Hard to argue with that one). Our soldiers are seen as pawns in a political game in the current arguement, not as killers.

Those are not mutually exclusive actions. I can support the troops while simultaniously questioning the government. Such is the virtue of a democratic nnation.
