Pentogenis will recoup most of the more than $30,000 he lost on the bogus deal. EBay has since repaid him $20,000, and Marshall said Monday that he will receive a $10,000 check from the sale of the Jeep. Pentogenis said he also sent just less than $2,000 to Young for other expenses.

There have been so many fraud reports that have hit the news lately that it should make ebay feel a bit uneasy.
Last evening they had an update on 60 Minutes II about the ebay story they repeated last Wednesday. They said they had a barrage of letters from viewers that were upset with the statement that there was little fraud on the site. They read a few letters where people said they were ripped off on ebay.
Bottom line, this press does not help the little guy who is an honest seller.

Oh, gee, I don't know, I think it's probably perfectly safe to send $30,000 to a total stranger as a down payment on a Ferrari.
Yuk yuk yuk.
My guess is that the fraudster offered the Ferrari at such a good price that the victim couldn't resist.

That's the epilogue to the story. He finally found the car he wanted and it was not a car on ebay.
Still, it ended well, he said. After three years of searching, Pentogenis, a self-described "car freak," has finally found his yellow Ferrari. He closed the deal Monday, he said, after flying to Miami to "visit the vehicle."

Yes, auctionace, that was my point.
Why didn't he "visit the vehicle" the first time?
Because it was a great price on the Ferrari he wanted and he was blinded by greed. Betcha.

It was only a down payment. The car was $165,000 . I admit that paypaling $30k to a seller is pretty risky and foolish. The article says he checked with other buyers of the seller before sending the money. The world of the very wealthy must be nothing like my world. I'd never send of the kind of money sight unseen but there must be some very dumb and very wealthy people out there. I guess all ebay sellers are partially subsidizing the duped seller in a way since ebay gave him $20k.

Depending on the Ferrari, $165k may have been a great price.
