I have a puzzle from the 1980's that was recalled. It was from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. In the background on the drawing, there is graffiti. Among the spray paint is a swastika symbol. Apparently, some people took offense to this and the company pulled the product off the shelves.

I know ebay has a ban on all Nazi related material. This isn't a Nazi item, but would they still pull it? If not, could I even describe why it was pulled or would the word swastika red flag the item?

you could take a picture and cover the swastika? then explain that it was pulled and that there is an offensive political symbol on the puzzle? just a thought

Have you done a search to see if/how the puzzle is/has been listed?

Your puzzle is not nazi paraphanalia - do not put nazi, or swastika in your title and you should be fine. I would use "banned" or "Pulled" and definately "Rare" in the title. As opposed to covering the swastika - scan it! It is the reason that the piece is rare and was pulled. State that it is the reason the piece was pulled from the market. If you only use the word in the description and not the titleyour should be fine.

Ebay rarely does it's own independent searches for things to pull - especially since they must refund your fees if they do pull something. It is generally other sellers that will report an offending item - generally to rid themselves of competition.

Wish we could have a list of all the banned words! I had trouble selling a book about Hitler and Nazi Germany's death camps awhile back, not able to launch it. And a book about wine, in the wine category, couldn't launch either. Screwy.

Now I'm launching (or trying to launch) a book about a British woman's life in Sicily after WWII. The local mafia boss befriended her and protected her. I've left "mafia" out of the description completely and said local "mob boss." I might try to put mafia back in after the auction launches and see what happens.

And this might be something you could try with the swastika! HOnestly, I would take a picture of the whole puzzle, including the swastika. As suggested by someone here, mention the offending symbol and after the auction launches try slipping swastika back into the description. Just a thought. I suppose we could get 8 - 10 years in the Ebay slammer for that?. . . .

Id take a picture of the whole puzzle...Then I'd put Rare/Banned/Pulled 1980 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles puzzle with offensive graffiti...then I'd stick the picture in Paint Shop Pro and Circle the swastika in a bright color like red...this way you never say it but point it out in a big way

It is not the offensive thing that is going the problem.
It is the recalled part.
Are you 100% sure it was recalled? If so, then it is against ebay policy to list it. It basically reads that no items that have been recalled maybe listed on ebay. For example toys, building materials, auto parts, ect but not limited to those. In your case I don't know how to check to see if it was recalled, but it maybe worth your time to make sure and cover your rear end.

Stone - you are not allowed to list items recalled due to safety issues. Items pulled volentarily from the market by the manufacturer because for non safety related issues do not apply.

I don't see how this can be considered offensive material by ebay. Actually the swastika was originally a good luck symbol.

ebay has about 246 listings with Swastika in the title and not all of them are stamps or coins or books either.

Everybody: I'm wondering now if some of those rules against selling or mentioning certain things in an auction apply only if we sell internationally?! I'd been told that ebay has agreements with some countries, like Germany, not to allow the sale of offensive items--but that must mean TO SOMEONE in THAT country? Does anyone know? If you just sell in the U.S. is there not going to be a problem then? Or am I off base?

DON'T use the word "banned" in your title or item description. I had an item that was banned for PC reasons in another country and eBay pulled it for the word "banned." So I substituted the word "missing." I think your best bet is to use the word "recalled."
