Sorry, don't know who to make a link...I read this "news story" on Drudge report. New seller? with -0- feedback, bid started at $100,000.,,,,bidders names are private? Wonder how high it will go?

It is not at all unusual for items like this to utilize private auctions. People able to bid in this range would rather not have their identities made public on a forum like ebay. Makes them target for a infinite amount of spamming, "special offers" and scam/hack attempts. Since these are items with verifiable sources and documentation I would expect this one to go high. It's already 50% above starting bid.

A Private Auction would be the ONLY way to prevent prankster bidders. The auction seller has to be sure to get bidders to the auction any way he can ( Elvis newgroups, etc. )

The seller got his leads and now can avoid the ebay FVF fees. The ebay auction was a good investment for only the listing fees.

The auction has been relisted and is now for pre-approved bidders only.
