This masterpiece measures 25.5" X 15.5" & is oil on fiberboard?

Thought I was the only one who had a painting on fiberboard. One thing to watch is that it cracks. I personally like it. I'd go ahead and list it.

I like it too! The scene almost reminds me of Bodega Bay in CA, you know, where Hitchcocks film The Birds was filmed!

Mention that it looks like a scene straight out of the film The Birds. (In your opinion, of course.) That would be a great selling point. It looks like that to me, as well. You can almost picture that little boat out on the water heading into shore.

Frame doesn't do to much for me but the picture is rather nice. It is a quiet scene with a beautiful view of a place that is out of the way. Sort of like a hide a way. It could be a drive up the North Shore of Lake Superior. It is really nice and I am sure it would make a great davenport picture for someone. Those were popular in the 40's.
Where you bought the picture did you ask for any information? Is the picture dated. Well the frame tells me it my be later than the 60's. Probably a local artist It's really a nice picture.

I like it, too! Maybe Lucy will ring in here and tell us if it's a scene near San Luis Obispo. Looks like some spots up the coast from LA.
If you could find out who the artist is, from the initials, that would be a real plus.

I was thinking it looked a little like the tiny oceanfront town of Jenner-By-The-Sea a few miles above Bodgea Bay at the mouth of the Russian River.

I guess Tomwii could name his picture "Memories of the Past" or "Hometown USA" Where is he. He hasn't been back since his original posting. What I would like to know did he ask any questions when he bought it? Is it a consignment piece and if so does the owner know anyting about it.
I don't think you would call is Folk Art and for sure not trash. Okay where is the Russian River?

Don't list it until you've reserched it and know what you have. It's nice, and COULD be a find.

How do you research it? The artist signed it "M.S" It's like those plates, put 'em and hope they're worth something.

Hi everybody,
Well, I'm not absolutely sure but Tom's painting sure does look a LOT like Avila Beach.
Here's a picture of the main beach in Avila. If this is where the painting was done, the artist would have been to the right of the buildings, looking north.
Tom, does your consignee know anything about the artist? As far as your question of where to put it, I wouldn't put it in folk art. I'd list it in Art - Paintings - Modern or Contemporary, depending on how old it is.
Incidentally, several years ago SLO County strong-armed the oil company that owned those big tanks you see on the hillside (I think maybe it was Unocal) and made them remove all the soil that had oil in it. The upshot is Avila is no longer what you see in the picture. It's been completely torn down and rebuilt.
Come to think of it, maybe I oughta mosey on down there one of these days...

Hi Lucy & Everybody: this painting came from an estate sale of an extremely rich & famous Florida family from last week
Other than the initials "MS", we really know nada about it -- wierd that very rich folks would have owned this!
The frame is horrid 60s trash!
