lurkyloo, did you set your laptop up wireless and/or do you have cable modem?

I've had the WORST trouble getting my desktop to stay online with the laptop hooked up. Evidently there's a "secret" page for SMC where you go in and configure your computer(s) and I'll be darned I don't have it right yet.

Well the secret page is http://192.168.2.1 is probably not so secret but I stumbled on it before their email came from them telling me to go there. But their instructions make no sense to me whatsoever.

The laptop has me spoiled anyhow compared to this 133 desktop so I spend most of my time on it anyway, but it would be nice to be able to log on with my desktop when I want to since it has all my bill paying stuff on it.

Hi glassgrl!

No, I don't have a cable modem at this time. I got this Toshiba to replace both my laptop and desktop, so a conflict of the two is not going to be an issue with me. Thanks for the heads-up on configuring it, though. I'm going to bookmark this thread just in case I eventually get a cable modem and have problems with it. I'm SO sorry you've had this much trouble. I definitely feel your pain, because I bought a zip drive a few years ago along with my desktop and practically tore my hair out when it wasn't compatible with my scanner. Took me a week to finally get someone to tell me how to fix it!!!!! AAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!

BTW that's why I LOVE this message board--it'a all about helping people. You may have saved me a ton of grief in the future!

Here's a long-stemmed rose to thank you.....

Bless your heart! I feel for you with no cable modem! That was one of the primary selling points was because it included the wireless connection thingys.

The setup is probably not as hard as I've made it, I'm sure I've keyed in something wrong and there's a conflict. Like right now, I'm showing two wireless connections on the laptop

I did go back and look at my book for the setup and they don't say anything about signing onto that website. The last line just says "now that you're connected you can log into the the web-based Administration page". But do they tell you where it is? No! I found it because I put in SSID & WEP SMC in google and it brought up that site. That's what their support was telling me to configure to match. Too bad since I bought mine 250 miles away from a CompUSA store that I couldn't take advantage of the "free" installation.

I can't stand to use my desktop anyway....I'd just as soon move it off into another room.

Now learning Windows XP after so many years of Windows 98 is another thing!

Funny you should say that--I was just thinking today that I might want to get a Dummies book, if only to really learn what is new in XP and have a reference. I haven't had one since my Windows 95 book (which I passed on to one of my sisters), and I really learned a lot from it. I never got one for my 98 computer since I figured it was pretty much like 95. I'll probably wait until I can get the XP for el cheapo--they're a bit too expensive now. I just got a Dummies for 98 book on half.com for another sister (who got my old so-slow-it's-a-dinosaur laptop and who has no computer experience). It was only $5.79 including the shipping, and that's a pretty fair price!
