Anybody see the 10 second commercial by eBay on NBC tonight during Law & Order CI?

Heard it more than saw it... What did you think of it?

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

I think the ebay tv commercials are lame. Can't they do any better than that?

But at least they're doing some advertising.

Ddi you notice that the little song and dance had no relevance to what the guy was asking?

It was all over the football games Sunday, even the Sunday night game. The commercials in the past have promoted unique expensive items, now it's save a few bucks and shop at ebaY.

The lamest ebay commerical was the one where the guy bought a goofy lamp to match the one that his wife already had and make it a set. But it was his wife that was the seller and he didn't even know it. What's the theme there? Make mistakes buying stuff on ebay and regret it?

AA - we thought the theme was "buyers and sellers are so dumb they can't even figure out that their own companion is in the transaction with them"

I really think EBAY would do better with a Radio and Print ad campaign than T.V.

They'd get to catch the working professionals commuting in their cars, and in newspapers on the trains. (Most of them don't watch T.V. that much, but do read a weekly or Sunday's paper, I think anyway...)

A lot of people have heard of EBAY, but don't really have a inkling as to what its all about. If they did, there might be more buyers.

Well, for what is worth, TV spots will get seen by more people than radio & newapapers combined. To Cover the entire nation with radio & papers would cost millions more than TV. It wasn't the greatest ad, but at least it was on. I know that eBay did this for their own benefit, but we can benefit from it too. Kinda like second hand smoke. LOL

I dunno, I kinda think the ads always draw more new sellers than new buyers.

I found Ebay for the first time, in a Golf Magazine.

But I think the people who frequent Ebay the most are the TV watchers.

I find ebay on every other Google search I make.

news story on the ad

Mendes' Splashy Ad Debut

Goodby, Silverstein & Partners' latest eBay ad, American Beauty director Sam Mendes' commercial debut, begins inauspiciously: A man with a cast on his arm logs on to a computer and asks his wife, "How do I get started?" Then the theatrics start: A bookshelf opens to reveal a blue-tinted stage, with backup dancers contorting and women dancing on pedestals. The wife sings "Do You Know the Way to Use eBay?" to the tune of "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" "You've got the world of film, through Sam, the world of theater, through the dancers and choreographers, and the world of advertising through us," says partner and cd Jamie Barrett, who served as co-copywriter. "It was cool to see these three worlds collide." The San Francisco shop pursued Mendes, also a theatrical director who staged the Tony-winning Cabaret, in an effort to take eBay's signature song-and-dance ads to the "highest level of production," Barrett says. Mendes, working out of Moxie Pictures, brought in the dancers, who are leads in Broadway musicals including Contact and Movin' Out, and his own eagle eye, which took note of details down to the sequins on a dancer's dress. "He's a crazy perfectionist," Barrett says. "He just notices everything." The ad broke last Thursday. A cinema spot using the song "On Broadway" and a TV commercial to the tune of "That's Amore" are in production.
