Anyone know if the 2543 Zebra printer is a good thermal printer? We have been using the old tape and paper method and we'd like to use a thermal printer. The reason we ask is they are being sold so cheaply on ebay. Just didn't want to invest even $50 if I need a more advanced printer. Thanks for your input.....

I use the Zebra 2844 and love it. Would recommend the thermal printers - not sure what the difference between the two models is, though.

Check Hippowholesale.com they are selling reconditioned lease end units for $39.00. The list on a new 2543 is $495, which means they may have sold for 200-400 The ones on eBay may also be used or reconditioned. This does not mean they are bad machines. The basic rule of business being you get what you pay for. If I were printing 1000's of labels a week I'd want a better unit. For a few 100 or less a week a 50 buck one might run quite awhile.

It's attached like a printer through a USB port. I have a UPS account and use their labels for them and USPS. I assume they will also fit the other thermal printer (I think the size is 4 X 6. They're free, plus I don't have to buy ink! Also be careful when buying labels on ebay - there are some sellers who are selling the free UPS labels.

norsystems on eBay is selling Eltron LP 2442 for about $40 shipped to USA. Its parallel port interface. Works perfectly for UPS WorldShip, Endicia.com, and Stamps.com - Been using mine for several months now and it speeds up processing a lot!

They only sell the printer, so you'll need to get your own paralle printer cable.

I did not like my Zebra printer. It kept making black and white stripes on the paper.

I ship mostly USPS as well. I purchased Zebra labels 4x6, but believe or not, the free ones from UPS are better quality.

Well, I got this far before I had to put in my log in ID http://www.ups.com/packaging/application/commercewf
Hopefully the link will work. On this page on the left side you'll see "get UPS labels, packs and more". There you'll see the free zebra labels. It's free to sign up for a UPS account, so even if you don't use UPS you can still create an account and use the labels.....I think.....

Registering for a UPS account is free. Its a smart idea since you can make labels through Paypal. But once you've signed up for an account, you can order supplies from UPS. 4x6 thermal labels are just one of many free items you can order. You can also order boxes. But realize the intended use of these supplies are for UPS only.

My earlier point was that Zebra thermal labels are not as high a quality as the ones UPS provides. The Zebra thermals wrinkle toward the end of the roll which make printing barcodes impossible. You have to throw away the roll with about 1/8 left. That's been my experience with a case I bought in Jan 2004.

UPS sucks.

A zebra died and went to heaven. St. Peter looks down at the zebra and says, "Why are you here? We don't usually get zebras." He paused a moment and added, "Do you perhaps have unfinished business or an unanswered question?"
The zebra thinks for a moment and says, "Why, yes, yes I do. Am I a white horse with black stripes or a black horse with white stripes?"
St. Peter flips through a few pages in a BIG book and replies, "Only God can answer that question. Go through the pearly gates and follow that path there," as he points out a seldom used trail, "and when you reach the chapel up on the mountain God will answer your question."
The zebra thanks St. Peter and goes through the pearly gates and starts up the trail. The path up the mountain is steep and very long. Finally, after a long exhausting climb, the zebra comes across a small church on the side of the mountain. 'This must be it,' thinks the zebra, 'but I don't have hands and can't even open the door, just great.' In a quavering voice the zebra asks, "Are you here, God?"
A deep voice comes from nowhere and asks, "YOU HAVE A QUESTION?"
The zebra looks around, does a zebra shrug, and asks, "Am I a white horse with black stripes or a black horse with white stripes?"
The vibrant voice responds, "YOU ARE WHAT YOU ARE."
The zebra knits his brow in confusion and says, "Oh, OK, Thanks, I think," and heads back down the mountain.
Right before he gets to the pearly gates the zebra runs into St. Peter getting off duty and St. Peter says, "Hey, it's the zebra. Did you get your question answered?"
The zebra replies, "I'm not sure, I asked God if I was a white horse with black stripes or a black horse with white stripes, and he replied," in a deeper zebra voice, now, "YOU ARE WHAT YOU ARE."
St. Peter chuckled and stated, "Oh, you are a white horse with black stripes."
The zebra drops a stitch as he knits his brow and asks, "How do you figure that?"
"Well, if you were a black horse with white stripes," St. Peter tells the zebra, "God would have said, 'You is what you is'."
