Hi all,

This pretty vase has a fairly significant crack in it. Just wondering it it's worth listing.

I have no idea how old it is. Oh, it's 8 1/2" tall.

It is made of cased cranberry glass with a pattern on the outside clear layer that looks like it was done in a mold. There's an animal head, a sheep, ram or goat maybe, at the top of the bottom part.

All help is gratefully accepted.

Your most humble servant,

Lucy

P.S. The sun's been over the yardarm for hours so get yourself over to Trader Joe's for some Two-Buck-Chuck!

Lucy, From your photo I don't think your vase is very old. I know its not Victorian Cranberry glass. I would not list the vase. I buy a lot of stuff fast and find a lot of dings, chips, cracks, and other damage later on. I set most of the damages stuff to one side and once a year I go to a junk flea market to sell the damaged stuff. I set out several tables of damaged items with big signs that say "all items for sale from 50 cents to 2 dollars" I have people fighting over the stuff. I go at 7am and stay until 11:30am and pick up a nice dollar. Buy the way at about 10:45 I send my helper around the flea looking for a dealer that will buy what ever I have left for 10 dollars. That keeps me from packing anything up and taking it home with me. The flea market customers love cheap buys and the dealer that buys my left overs for 10 bucks also loves it. If you buy a lot of stuff its a good way to get rid of your junk.

Hi MsLucy... Your vase does look newer to me because of the molded pattern, but I am not familiar with the pattern or the mold, so can't really say. Does it have a pontil mark on the bottom?

As for your list or not list question... Are you feeling lucky??

I had a nice unmarked, but obviously high quality porcelain flower pot with cherubs that I knew could do well. Unfortunately, I did not notice until I was ready to list that 2 of the 3 cherubs had missing hands. I decided to just list it anyway and spell out all the "warts". Started it at a low $5.00. The darned thing sold for $32 and went to Spain with an additional $30.00 postage! Go figure. I even wrote the buyer and made sure that he had read the ad and understood the damages to the piece. He was ecstatic when it arrived.

So if your piece has at least one clean display side, you might want to list it. For many collectors the item is going on a shelf for looks and they don't care if it has a flaw as long as they can hide it. Good Luck! D

Lucy...I sell a lot of china and pottery. The two highest dollar single plates I sold both had bad chips on the backside of the rims. I started each an something ridiculous like $2.99 just hoping to get rid of them. They both closed in excess of $150.00 each. It turned out that both of these plates were very sought after by collectors in ANY condition they could find them. These two auctions occurred a year apart and were not part of the same lot. The point is, invest a few pennies and give it a shot. It's cheaper than buying a lottery ticket at the corner liquor store, and your odds of a good return are much better with the vase than with the ticket. If it doesn't sell, fill it with a bottle of two buck chuck, cover the top with saran wrap, and present it as a gift to Sanmar
The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

Hi all,

Yes, it does have a pontil mark on the bottom. Here's a pic.

I think I will list it. Who knows? It's a nice color, pretty when the light comes through. As Sparkz suggests, if it doesn't sell Sanmar can put it on a window sill.

As always, thanks for the input!

Lucy

Edited to fix the link. Too early, need to finish my coffee.
