Hi All, A friend wants me to list this orental wall hanging and I know nothing about such things. I have googled and yahooed and seen nothing remotely like it. Any help would be appreciated. It is 64 inches long and 38 inches high. I think the front is all silk and there is some damage. The back may have been added later to stabalize it. It seems more like early cotton. There is a place for a rod to hang it with and the stamp in one corner of the back that reads "Guaranteed over 100 years old by Milnor Inc. (something) Made in (something).

I have more close up pictures if you want to see them but didn't want to put in too many at first. Thanks for any help!! Harriett

It looks like two pair of panels that have been stitched together.
You didn't give dimensions but a pair of the panels looks like those half-curtains you see in every Japanese restaurant. They surely have a name but I don't know what it is. Those are usually cotton. Are you sure about silk?
My first guess would be a tourist purchase later assembled to make the hanging.

There is a kimono listed on ebay with the same name.
Label says Milnor Inc. Importers, Made in Japan.

this is not a japanese NOREN,room divider you see in japanese restaurant .
it looks chinese-nice embroidered work on silk.red is a favorite color of chinese,it stands for happiness and a favorite color in wedding.
you need to show the pattern of the red ,it may give some clue as to the purpose of the piece.

He didn't say it was embroidered and it doesn't look it; it looks printed.
Thanks for the word "noren" but at 38 inches long, that's about the length of most of them I've seen.

may be it is printed, hard to tell.
but it is not a noren, people walking in and out of the room will lift the noren,in old days ,people will even use it to wipe their hands, and they dont make noren in silk.

Sorry I couldn't get back sooner. It definitely is embroidered. Here are some more pictures.
The center seam goes up about a third of the way in the red and then Y's to either side of the center design. Hope this helps.

VERY pretty piece! 38 x 64, you say? That's rather large. It would be wonderful on the right wall in the right home.

I think they are just stylized flowers mixed in with the butterflies. I guess you must like it, huh.

I am having trouble getting the owner to tell me the minimum she is willing to take. I probably won't list it until after March 25 anyway because I will be leaving soon to see a new grandson and don't want to list it and leave before I had a chance to complete the transaction. When I pin the owner down and get back from my trip I will let you know when I list it. Thanks for all your input! Harriett
