Wife received this e-mail this morning:

"We recently reviewed your account, and suspect that your PayPal account may
have been accessed by an unauthorized third party. Protecting the security of your account and of the PayPal network is our primary concern."

"Therefore, as a preventative measure, we have temporarily limited access to sensitive PayPal account features."

"Click below in order to regain access to your account:

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_login-run

For more information about how to protect your account, please visit PayPal's Security Center, accessible via the "Security Center" link located at the bottom of each page of the PayPal website.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and appreciate your assistance in helping us maintain the integrity of the entire PayPal system. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
The PayPal Team

Please do not reply to this e-mail. Mail sent to this address cannot be answered. For assistance, log in to your PayPal account and choose the "Help" link in the header of any page."

Fortunately the wife is a very suspicious person, logged into PayPal in the usual manner and found that her account was intact, with no problems whatsoever. Also, the link listed above was a hyperlink in the original e-mail and now leads to a totally unrelated website, currently under construction.

Is this a typical ploy for scammers? We've not had any problems of this type until now.

Oh, yeah, the Limited Access scam. I get a couple of these a day...sent to an email address that no longer is attached to any PayPal account.

Don't be surprized if you also start getting these fakes from "eBay"
Just forward them to [email protected]

Since it's your first it's good your wife picked up on the scam & checked it out.

Thanks for the info.

The properties of the original hyperlink yielded this:

http://audioflux.net/images/webscr.htm

When I tried earlier, this was a dead-end, but is now apparently a PayPal fake website. Is there an e-mail address I can forward this information on to at PayPal?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I received one of these the other day, I never received one that claimed limited access to my account. I immediately forwarded it to spoof@paypal,and then deleted it. Paypal got back to me within minutes telling me it was not a legitimate email and to delete it now, if I have not already done so, I could not believe how quickly they responded.

I've gotten those emails before. I never click on any links - I simply forward the eBay scams to [email protected] and the PayPal scammers get forwarded to [email protected] and never give it another thought. Of course the first email like this one is always alarming. Glad you didn't type in any user ID's or passwords.

Got that one too. About the unteen millionth I have had from "eBay", "PayPal", my "credit card" company, and even (ironic since I am my own domain) the "admin@mydomain".

I was more worried by the last one because it was addressed to an email account I only use for PayPal but then I realized that they must have infected the email of someone i sent a payment to.
