anybody have any suggestions? have you ever dealt with this?
I called UPS for a price quote on shipping something and they quoted me a price and said for $5.00 they'd come pick it up and I said ok. Then she said "oh we won't be able to get that today so we'll get it tomorrow for free". That was yesterday (Friday) and they assured me that they would pick it up sometime between 10-7.
At 6pm they called and asked if it had been picked up yet and I said no. She said well they still have an hour or so to go.
I called back at 7:30 and said they haven't come by, now what? At that point she said that they are still in the area they may still come by.
8:30 comes and go and I called again. She says this time to call in the morning and ask to speak to a supervisor. I did but didn't get a supervisor. The guy put me on hold several times and they said they would come get it today (Saturday)
She did say yesterday that when this happens they usually expedite the service and upgrade to another level, since I was quoted a Tues delivery.
I don't want to take the package to the UPS place. This is one of those ummmm...BIG packages. And if they're going to ship it for that amount they can come get it and I'll pay. I don't want to stand in line and argue with them about the price. When I first called she said it would be $26.00 and went to write it up and we got cut off. I called back and the next girl said it would be $108. to ship, but I kept saying I'd been quoted $26.00. She finally got it down to that price but with added insurance took it up to $28.00.
So I don't want to piss them off either. I want them to come get the package and ship it for that amount!

IMO, UPS sucks. More often than not, I sit around waiting for a package that never comes. When I call, I get told there was an "exception". What exception? The driver decided he didn't want to deliver any more packages today? I won't ever use them and I dread it when my suppliers do.

LOL McJane! How are you doing? The weather is pretty nice here! I was just thinking about you earlier.
It's a glass cutter. 50" X 59" but it's not a big square box...it's L shaped. The cutoff for greyhound is 30" x 47" x 82".
It's 55 pounds too.

AND THAT is why I use FedEx Ground. I have an open acct with them & have never had a time that they didn't pick it up on the day quoted. It may be at 7PM but they get it done. & I don't have a hassle about weight. A 55# pkg by FedEx Ground home delivery would be approx. $35.00. There most likely be a surcharge for over size pkg. Maybe anothjer $7.00.Their P/U charge is a max of $11.00/week, if you ship at least $50.00 in weight chges, it goes down to $8.00/week.

That's good to know Sanmar. This is the first time I've tried to ship UPS, I always ship FedEx normally.
If you put my package dimensions in the online calculators it assumes it's that size square, which mine isn't. UPS says it doesn't qualify for shipping and FedEx says the same. I don't mind paying a surcharge if they'll just ship the darn thing!
I just assumed that anything outside of their size dimensions you had to ship freight, or that they would not ship it at ALL. I thought that when I called she would tell me that and transfer me to the freight department. When she said $26.00 I about fell out of the chair.
I had no idea there was just an "oversize" surcharge that you could use. Why don't they mention it on their website?

The oversize "surcharge" is actually a dimensional weight formula where they assess a higher minimum weight if the package exceeds regular package sizes. There are two oversize classifications for FedEx Ground. I don't know about UPS. If you enter the dimensions into their ratefinder and get a message that reads "exceeds maximum allowable size" they won't take it. When this happens, you want to try to reposition the label so that your original length is entered as height, width is entered as length and height is entered as width. Many times re-entering the dimensions in a different order this way will cause it to be calculated as acceptable.

When UPS finally comes and says it is too big, go to www.freightquote.com
You can send it by freight to the closest terminal for probably $50 to $100 depending on the distance.
If you don't want to bother signing up, email me (at my mailstep address) and I will give you my account reps phone number and/or email. He can give you a rate right away.

UPS is the same except the OS2 is the 70 Lb rate instead of 50 Lbs like Fedex.
Last time I checked, the FedEx online calculator didn't work for OS3.
Oversize Weight:
A package weighing less than 30 lbs. and measuring more than 84 inches and equal to or less than 108 inches in combined length and girth will be classified by FedEx Ground as an Oversize 1 (OS1) package. The transportation charges for an Oversize 1 (OS1) package will be the same as a 30-lb. package being transported under the same circumstances.
A package weighing less than 50 lbs. and measuring more than 108 inches in combined length and girth will be classified by FedEx Ground as an Oversize 2 (OS2) package. The transportation charges for an Oversize 2 (OS2) package will be the same as a 50-lb. package being transported under the same circumstances.
A package weighing 150 lbs. or less and measuring more than 130 inches in combined length and girth will be classified by FedEx Ground as an Oversize 3 (OS3) package. The transportation charges for an Oversize 3 (OS3) package will be based on the greater of 90 lbs. or the actual rounded weight. An oversize charge of $30 per package will also apply to any package measuring greater than 130 inches in length and girth.

The OS/3 category was just created the first of February I believe. I haven't sold anything bulky enough to even try it out. In fact, I rarely ship anything large enough to qualify for OS/2. The OS/1 is the one I really watch out for. It's awful easy for that one to sneak up on you if you're not careful.

The OS/3 was in response to UPS adding it prior to that. I use UPS for all of my shipments over 2 pounds. I always have great service and in the rare case an insurance claim needs to be issued, it is easily filed and normally paid in 7-10 days.
I think you must have a driver that was lazy or a dispatcher that doesn't know the pickup terms. If they told you they would pick up on Saturday, that should put up a red flag. My guess is they will be there on Monday.

Yay! UPS finally arrived. A supervisor called this morning and said I had neglected to give them an apt number and that's a big fat lie. I ship too much stuff not to include that. Anyway, he stuck a sticker on it and toted it away for $28.80. Unbelievable!
Folks, it pays to call and get a quote if you've got a larger size package.
