I had an item Saturday with a minor bidding war between two people. The losing bidder won a similar item and since I had extras of the initial item, I sent them a 2nd chance notice on the one they lost which they accepted.
This morning I get an email from the original winner wanting the total on his item plus the two items that the "loser" had gotten. Turns out they are married and he had scheduled a snipe bid from his account a few days earlier and forgot to tell his wife.
Since he was so good humored about it and their competing ids drove the prices up far above cost I gave them free shipping.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

It happened to me too. I told my son something I wanted for Christmas but never thought he'd actually listened. I found what I wanted just before Christmas....and you guessed it. He called about 2 minutes after it ended saying "Thanks for bidding against me Mom."

Hi all,
JPenn, I did that once at a live auction... Not realizing my son was bidding, I stuck my number up in the air and, as he says, sniped him.
Boy, did I ever get a look from him!

I think they did a show on it on a sitcom that had Jim Beluchi. Guy wanted a football item and the wife told him not to buy any more auction items, then she decided to get it for him for his birthday, but of course he HAD to have this one and was bidding on it anyway without her knowing. It was cute.

Reminds me of that goofy ebay TV ad form a while back, where husband sells a lamp and wife buys it (wihtout knowing hubby was the seller) or vice versa.
It was cute.
