I have a question about a dutch auction. There are 5 of an item listed for sale. If I win the bid, can I buy all 5 items?

Let me see if I understand correctly, IF I win the auction and choose all 5, I will pay whatever the auction closed out for each. In other words, if the auction closes for $5.00, then I will pay $25.00 for all 5, correct?

That is correct
However if you placed a quantity of 5 and there are only 5 available, and someone comes in and bids $6 for one, he would still only pay $5 because you pay the lowest bid price, but you would not be obligated to buy 4 because you wanted all 5, you would not have buy any.

Twelvepole -- So what you're saying is you pay the lowest bid price?

Yes
Example
I have 12 items up
High bidder is at $25 ea for 2
Second bidder is at $21.50 for 6
third bidder is at $18.00 for 2
fourth bidder is $16.75 for 2
Auction ends...
All bidders get their items for $16.75

Oh I understand now. But how does a dutch auction pay out for the seller? I mean, wouldn't it be better to list each one individually up to ebay's limit?

there is a limit on how many listings you can have for the identical item in one day,so you dont hog the auction site.
bidders are not stupid,if they see the same item zillion times, they dont bid more than the minimum bid.

The dutch auctions I have run have made me money each and every time, even with deadbeats.
You just start the min bid where you are comfortable, just like an auction and hope the lowest bid is above that.

It all depends upon the goal of the seller. Most of the time, it is cheaper to list many items in a dutch auction then listing them separetly. For example, I have 10 items that I am willing to sell for $9.00. If I list these individually, I will pay $3.50 in listing fees. If I list them dutch, I will pay only $2.40 in listing fees. The FVF's would stay the same. Over time, this does add up. Especially on higher priced items.

Twelvepole:
I’m looking into selling dutch for the first time your statement:
“You just start the min bid where you are comfortable, just like an auction and hope the lowest bid is above that. “
Do I understand you correctly? That the winning bid could be lower than your min bid?
Please clarify.
Also is there any other tip or pitfalls that anyone might want to share?

they cannot bid below his asking price, ebay would give them a message.
best is to try it and find out for yourself.

No they cannot bid below your minimum bid that you set.
in my example my min bid would be no lower than $16.75
I like them for multiple items all at once...
However deadbeats and slow payers are a pain

Twelvepole -- I'm still having trouble understanding. Here's what it looks like:
Apr-17-04 04:32:23 PDT US $12.25 2 Bidder ( 782) Payment options available when auction ends.
Apr-17-04 04:00:24 PDT US $10.00 1 bidder ( 472) Payment options available when auction ends.
Apr-15-04 19:19:22 PDT US $5.00 1 bidder ( 5 ) Payment options available when auction ends.
Apr-17-04 06:17:39 PDT US $3.25 1 bidder ( 5 ) Payment options available when auction ends.
Quantity still available. Lowest successful bid is minimum bid amount.
How do I bid if I want to win all 5?

Well, I took the plunge not knowing what I was doing and ended up winning 2 of them. Not only am I happy, but I now know how dutch auctions work and won't be afraid to bid on them again.

Did you bid on all 5 of them on the same bid? If so, you technically didn't win any of them. Make sure you contact the seller right away notifing them that you will accept the 2 you won. Otherwise they might bypass you as per ebay rules, if you don't win your bid amount, you aren't required to purchase any.
