Hi, all. I have a large figurine I want to sell on Ebay; a Dutch friend tells me it's a depiction of a woman named "Kniertje the fishwife." I've googled and got only that designation, too.

Is anyone on this message board Dutch? I'd love to know more about this woman so I can add it to my description. Or do you have any clues as to how I could get this information?

Wish I could help you Roadsmith, but I'm still trying to figure out how Dutch auctions work. Other than having once smoked a Dutch master cigar and drinking a 6 pack of Heineken, the only thing I know about Holland is that it's a state located next to Michigan.

Maybe it was not who he said it was.

Is it a figure of a woman carrying a cooking pot of somekind, with a lid?

If you google "Kniertje" under images, a picture comes up, depicting an actress as "Kniertje" There is a lot of text, which Babelfish rather imperfectly translates. Seems the story of Kniertje was related in a play called "Op hoop van zegen" that was also made into a film 4 times, the first in 1918 (I looked it upon the IMDB--but no info besides cast/characters is given for any version). I also gather that "many homes" in the Netherlands have a picture of Knierjte with her little pot in her hands. The person who posted the picture/info also provides a bit of dialog fromthe play. I gather that the story is about a widow who has a son, Berend, who is afraid to go to sea. His mother urges him to stop acting like a child, that the ship is in God's hands. He goes to sea, but the ship sinks and he feeds the fish.

If many homes do,in fact have such a picture, then likely it is a pretty well-known folktale.

Bunny! Thank you so much! Yes, she has a cooking pot in her hands. I too found reference to a play (or more than one play) about her. What you've given me is enough to go on, I think, and it corroborates who this is.

Sparkz. Didn't we all learn in school that Holland is a state next to Michigan? I appreciate your reminding me of that LOL.
