Hello
Just wondering if others are having any like type problems.
I have windows 98, Norton, Outlook Express 6 etc. As of late when I look at ebay lots a few (maby 1 in 30) of the pictures will not open. When this happens the computer will not function on the internet at all until I reboot it. This only happens when I log on Ebay and no where else
(At least so far).

This is new to me as have used same computer for years. Norton says all is well.

Any ideas

David

Possibly the images are being hosted on a domain that you or your ISP have blocked? Do you get any error messages? Also, maybe the .jpg images that won't open are of a variation your browser can no longer read because of a corrupted file. There are several different types of images that share the .jpg extension.

I haven't had a problem with locking up, but when I open an auction with too many photos, the isp will time out and consider it completely downloaded when in fact it is only about 30% downloaded. If it happens to be an auction I really want to look at, then I click the refresh button and most of the time it will complete the download.

This is why it is so important to limit photos in your auctions and combining them when possible.

Your problem is Windows 98. I had the same problem & a friend told me that this was common with W/98. I switched to W/2000 Professional & have never had a freeze up since.

Your problem may be with Windows 98. I used to have the same problem & I put in 2000 Professional & never have anymore problems. 98 & ME are noted for freezing up.

Thanks all.
I noted that some lots even want you to have Microsoft flash version #6. Some sellers are making it difficult for buyers to look with pictures way to big, add-on required programs and odd image hosts. Wonder if they ever sell anything?

I may go to windows 2000 sometime as many have told me 98 corrupts and is now darn near impossible to fix. (No support)

Again thanks all

David,

I think I may know what you are experiencing. The JPEG file format allows for the inclusion of EXIF data. (EXIF data usually contains information about what digital camera took the picture, exposure rate, date, time, etc...) For a long time... no software company was incorporating this information whenever a JPEG was saved. However... in the most recent versions of Adobe Photoshop & Photoshop Elements.... Adobe has started saving this EXIF data in the JPEG file.... which is a perfectly good use of the JPEG file format. HOWEVER... Microsoft, in it's infinite wisdom... has lots of bugs in their programs (there's a shock, right?) One of the problems is that certain combinations of certain versions of Internet Explorer and Windows operating systems can't handle the EXIF data that is stored in the JPEG files. Whenever one of these special combos trys to access a JPEG with EXIF data embedded... it crashes the system (exactly like you've described) and won't become restored until the next time you restart your computer. Don't be mad at Adobe for using the EXIF data... be uspet with Microsoft for not supporting it. Upgrading your Internet Explorer or your Operating system might help (but you might end up on another combination that also does the same thing). It's yet another reason why Macintosh computers are SOOOO much nicer to support. They actually work like they're supposed to!

Ps... just as a follow up. This issue CAN also happen on Windows 2000. I've experienced it myself with Internet Explorer v.6.0. So... if you think that upgrading to Windows 2000 will solve it... just be prepared that it may not.

Thanks sounds just like what is happening.
I have been a seller for a long time but only an occasional buyer. Now I am a 100% buyer and am running into all sorts of weird stuff on ebay and I don't mean the lots either. In my humble observation sellers are over teched in their listing while Ebay seems to be getting old and tired with only some effort to "Fluff" up the site to run like a clock for all hands. Again thanks.
But what to do?

I am fairly new to computers (about a year) and did not choose my operating system. I had WEBTV and when one of my online friends offered me a FREE computer he put together from spare parts, I didn't hesitate for a minute. It came with Windows 2000, a free set up and about 3 hours of instruction and then it was sink or swim. I've been doing OK (especially with graphics & photo work)but everyone seems to recommend that I get rid of the 2000 and put in XP. I read somewhere that 68% of Windows users have XP and only about 10% use 2000. I learn things on a need to know basis or simply by accident while trying to figure out something else! I'm practically illiterate when it comes to computer jargon and so get a bit stressed when people give me directions using terms they ASSUME I know & understand. Can ANYONE explain to me in SIMPLE terms why a photo submitted to Vendio in jpeg format is now in a format that eBay says they can't process? I went to the photo, clicked the url, pasted it on eBay and then got an email from eBay saying they can't process it and to convert it to a jpeg format. Easy for them to say, but I have no idea how to do that and no one seems to want to tell me.

First make sure Pickel(?spelling) count is 100 or less a picture with a high count may be clearer but won't load right. That data is found in your scanning program and should be easy to check. That is usually the problem I found when I was also struggling along. Second look in your computer file and insure is a jepeg not a bitman etc. Third if still fails rescan and try to load here on AW. I once had to rescan and try about six times until I found out what I was doing wrong. Hope that helps and you are not alone with this fluctuation most of us have gone the route you are going.
