I believe the Indian dancer is called a Kachina Snake Dancer.

When a snake is found this Kachina captures the snake and dances with it, usually in his mouth. When the dance is completed, the Kachina returns the snake to its home and sends a message with the snake to ask the gods to bring rain according to the Navajo Indian tradition.

Classic; where did you grow up?? I have at least 6 really nice Bolo Ties., that cost from $25.00 to $50.00 each. There are very popular in the SW USA.. I know you must be from the East Coast.

Not Navajo Indian tradition but Hopi. (Kachinas are something else -Gods.) The Hopis perform this ceremony anually in the summer. It is believed that the rattlesnakes are milked of their venom before the ceremony. The bolo tie is ofcourse not made of sterling silver or real turquoise.

lucy, thank you. these senior moments are hitting more and more often when it comes to the words i need.

buyhigh, i bought one that says nickel silver on the back. this is not really silver, right?

the kachina dancer is white metal with a goldtone finish...very heavy piece for a tie...it is 3" long.

Nickel silver contains no silver at all -( also called German silver )- just resembles silver. It is a combination of copper, nickel and zinc.

I have one bolo that is a signed piece of art from a local artist. I would not sell it, a nice car might get me to swap. I don't know the value, but I like it. Maybe I'll take it to the roadshow if it ever hits bubbaville, here.

Next time you're tempted to channel surf right past an old western movie, stop a moment and look at what some of the men are wearing. Bolo (string) ties. And you'll see it on the street in the southwest.

I was married in 1959 and I see in the wedding pictures that some of the gents had bolo ties on.
