Here's something odd.

I took my completed rebate application (for the Teutonic dishsmasher we bought recently) to the local p.o. and the clerk told me that if I insisted on having it hand-cancelled, he would have to charge me 90 cents.

I thought he was putting me on, but he swore up and down on his autographed photo of Lance Armstrong that this is the case.

"We have a cancellation guarantee," he said. "The mail all gets postmarked up in San Francisco and if you drop it off in time for today's pickup, it's guaranteed to have the right date on it."

I pointed out that rebate processing companies just loooove to reject applications due to late postmarks and that the guarantee won't mean jack cheese if I don't get the $50 rebate because someone didn't make a pickup they were 'sposed to.

Have you heard anything about this?

Hi Fluffy,

I've never heard of that, nor have I ever been charged for hand-cancellation.

The only time there's been an additional charge is if the packet is less than an ounce and more than 1/4" thick. Then they charge an extra 11 or 12 cents.

Maybe your postal clerk is suffering from terminal PMS or could it possibly be a tizzy?

I think he is as well informed as the guy that told the other poster here that everything going oversees requires customs declaration when even their own computers show that under 16 ounces does not. I wonder if your genious was referring to their "certificate of mailing" which is my favorite PO waste of money service. For 90 cents they hand stamp a 3x4 piece of paper that you have filled out with the mailling address. You can't track anything, there is absolutely nothing that coonects that piece of paper to the piece being mailed and somehow they offer you this service with a straight look on their face.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Sounds about right.

This is, BTW, the guy who tried to tell me I couldn't send anything other than documents and correspondence on a Priority Mail flat rate envelope because it says "Just pack all your correspondence and documents inside" on it.

Fluffy...Sounds like it's time you have a confidential chat with the local postmaster. If he pulled these two stunts on you, what surprises does he spring on all the other customers he deals with? Is he perchance a former Enron employee?

I've heard and SEEN it.

Business hours are business hours. However in major cities some post offices are open 24 hrs or at least till 11pm as it is near LAX where I used to go when I was running really late and or higher than normal volume (like december)

There is always some desperate losers that had to get whatever utility bill post marked THAT DAY!!!

But its 10:45 pm...... the PO would NOT hand cancel it no ifs, ands, buts, excuses or exceptions. Many hours past the days cut off for same day mechanical stamping.

However if you pay the 90 cents for the certificate of mailing you get a slip of paper with the hand cancelled date stamp and the corresponding envelope you are trying to mail.

If the PO Instead of being nice and simply extending the hours for TAX DAY and made you go in and pay the 90 cert of mailing after 5 pm just think of how much money they'd make lol

A couple of months ago one of the clerks at my local post office raised a question about charging me extra for my packages since all are stamped " Fragile Do No Bend Photo Enclosed".

He asked the postmaster and came back and said there wouldn't be a charge. I don't think they hand stamp them though.

He once offered to let me stand at the counter and hand stamp my own packages but when I asked another clerk to let me do it she said the hand-stamper could not go on the customer side of the counter (AND THEY ARE STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER DAY IN AND DAY OUT!).
