I thought I'd pass along a couple of simple but important computer tips. I have used a program called Popup Ad Filter for a number of years, and it is a good program (if you keep it updated) and stops 98% of Popups. But, recently I started having Popup problems. My husband, who is a WebMaster, and computer tech, came over (that means from acrosss the room) and we updated my Popup Filter program. THEN, he had me add two FREE programs, which he has been using for a goodly while.
1. Ad-aware
2. Spy-bot Search
It was totally unbelievable how many programs were logged into my computer which I had never down loaded, and programs which trace everywhere you go, and programs that can even send out messages from within your computer. It was awful, and you'd be amazed what has gotten into your computer too!
Both of the above programs are free, and you can download them at:
If you don't want unknown entities following you all over the internet, and logging where you have gone, and such, you might seriously consider both of these programs. I don't know about you, but I want my computer private and secure - not open to any and everything piece of garbage on the WWW. These programs also block future attempts of tracking programs and such to enter your computer. The programs do different jobs, so for full security, you need both programs.

Thank you jw ... a few folks in this forum have often discussed the AdAware and Spybot, and a lot of us use those ... have not heard of PopUpAdFilter ... have been using panicware's popup stopper free version ...
Always nice to put these tips at the forefront though, so thanks.

Fluff - No - but then neither do the programs they combat
For fighting pop-ups, just turn on the Pop-up Stopper in Safari.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

I know, I know, I just couldn't resist.
Hey fenix: Guess what I got at the flea market this weekend? Three iMacs. Two are Indigo 500 mhz and one is a 400 mhz Strawberry. The Indigos are only 2 years old and surprisingly speedy.
For those who didn't catch it before, let me say again: It is not possible to buy these machines as cheaply on eBay as you can get them in real life. Never mind shipping (and most sellers want $50 to ship an iMac).
My iMac listing farm is taking shape! Woo-hoo!
I do need a cheap source for replacement keyboards and mice, though. Yet another action item. I won't be buying 'em on eBay, that's for sure.

I hear you on the keyboard and mouse issue. My Logitech Optical is faring well though. I'm not ure if that is thanks the the mouse or the more stable OSX platform since I have not found myself picking it up and slamming it back down on the desk whenever I locked up Photoshop - it's not locking up anymore. Average keyboard lifespan around here is about a year right now. (Did those Imacs come with the official Mac toy keyboard? I love their computer but that keyboard is a damn nightmare - way too compact.

Yep, we got toy keyboards in various flavors. Which actually works out well since the machines are going side by side on three 48-inch wide rolling racks.
