And sometimes not.
I just opened a check payment from a new customer who purchased two items.
The first thing that struck me was her check: every square millimeter is covered with her bad handwriting. I'd scan it and post it here but I don't want to give out her contact info. It is truly something to see, from the VOID IF ANYTHING IS CHANGED NOT BY ME (initialed) inscription at the top to the dollar box where she traced over the amount paid ($17.13) so many times with her pen that the paper is starting to split.
Every notation on this check is followed by her initials in a circle. Next to the amount is written FULL TOTAL DUE, which is circled and of course initialed. You can barely make out her signature at the bottom because she has written irrelevant auction information (including my feedback number at the time) all around it (and initialed it, too).
Clearly, in her warped way of thinking, she's trying to make this some sort of watertight document. Wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that she shorted me a dollar.

Hi
Be SURE to write across the check in big red letters (Felt tip) "VOID FOR INSUFFICIENT PAYMENT" (and of course initial it!!)

Obessive compulisve mathmatically challenged jewelry nuts. I don't know Fluff - that could be the last untapped market on ebay. I would suggest that you appeal to her senses and wrap her package with no less than 5 layers of duct tape and then write all over the tape to ensure it is not tampered with. Could win you a customer for life.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Obsessive compulsive was my thoughts also. What a way to live.
If you emailed and told her it appeared someone else's initials were on her check with one of the changes, and the bank almost would not cash it, she would probably really go nuts.

My thought would be an older person that is losing it. If my bank would take the check as it is, I would mail her stuff the lose of a dollar wouldn't kill me. I flea market in an area where I deal with a lot of mentally challenged people, so I guess I'm use to it.

Some banks won't honor a check if it has more than one initialed mistake on it. You might want to wait for that to clear before you ship if you decide to deposit it.
