I have an auction up now with a reserve of $125.00. I also stated the amount of the reserve in the auction. I now have 13 bids on the auction, and nobody has hit the reserve. Why would anyone bid, knowing that they aren't going to get the item? Just practicing?

Because bidding is fun.

No offense intended, Max, but I'm amazed how many sellers don't realize this.

Auctioning is only a widget-in, cash-out, largely mechanical process for us sellers. Bidders are in it for thrills.

Clearly you weren't SERIOUS about the $125 right??

$125 was just what you were hoping to get lol

Or you might offer it to them for THEIR $5 bid if it doesn't sell. Cuz you're so desperate and I read in a magazine you can get stuff really cheap on Ebay!

*rolls eyes*

Everytime Ebay comes out with its new version of horribly lame commercials the overall average IQ currently logged into Ebay take a serious plunge.

While I hate reserve auctions, I have bid below reserve, won the auction, and a couple of times the seller went through with the sale

ebayvet,,,,,,confused,,,,,,Do you really mean the seller e mailed, you ,,,,or you e mailed the seller and THEN made a deal on the side? (which I care less about)As there is no way one can be below the reserve and WIN anything....... you bought off line , correct? Happens all the time........that's how many reserve auctions end up......water testing and then a sale comes about.......

Oh come on, this one is easy. Your bidders are trying to get a bargain. They're playing chicken, sneaking up on the reserve slowly so as not to cause a bidding war too early and driving the final price well over the reserve.

Why would you pay eBay extra to have a reserve price auction if you are going to put the price in the auction?

Maybe they read all the posts here over the years complaining that sellers wouldn't reveal their reserve.

Actually, it may be (at least it used to be) cheaper to start listing low with 125 reserve than to start listing with 125 opening bid. If the reserve was met, the reserve fee was cleared.

As for why the under-reserve bids, some psychological reasons, some practical. I used to do this in order to keep an eye on items without bookmarking or adding to "my eBay". That way I could check on them from any other computer without the need to log in.

This is why I hate reserves...whats the POINT?? If you wanted $125.00 for the widget, just have the starting bid at $125.00
That way you wont have to worry about losing money. Now if you dont get any bids at that starting price, guees what??

THE PEICE OF CRAP YOUR SELLING ON EBAY AINT WORTH $125.00--HELLO??

I will never, ever, ever bid on anything with a reserve price on it.I dont have time or patience to look at or keep bidding on some silly auction for seven days wondering what the hell the seller is willing to take for it ,or if Im even going to win.If I see something I want that has a reserve price on it,I will look elsewhere-believe me there are plenty of other sellers selling the same thing without reserve prices on them-at least I know right from the begining what they want for it.
Ebay should abandon this stupid practice of reserve auctions and stop wasting the bidders time.In fact anyone caught selling a widget with a reserve price on it,should be locked in a dark room and kept awake for 72 straight hours....and be forced to listen to Barry Manilow records.

I have this attitude this morning for a couple of good reasons.

1-I havent had my first cup of coffee yet.
2-I havent had my first cigarette yet.
3-My wifes been away for 4 days and my "johnsons" on edge.
4-Yesterday I did an Iraqi prisoner immatation and walked around the house naked with a pair of my wifes panties over my head, until I tripped over her Siamese cat and fell down the stairs.

THAT IS ALL

The reason is much simpler than that -- and we all know it's true. The first rule of ebaying:

BUYERS DO NOT READ AUCTION TEXT.

Period.

How many times have you posted the shipping info only to be asked over and over again?

Item just closed with 18 bids---Well over the reserve. 14 bidders were kissing their sister. None of the low ball bidders won the item.
