One more time, please. Maybe someday I can help one of you with something. I really hope so. Anyway, I know brass doesn't generally do well, but I'm trying to identify this old solid brass vase. Here's a photo of it (thanks to your help I can actually post it) and one of the bottom. I think it's a pretty interesting piece, but I may be the only one that thinks that! Thanks in advance! Oh, yeah - it's about 9-1/2" tall and weighs over 2-1/2 lbs.!

Are you sure it's brass - could it be bronze?
If you could get someone to read the Oriental marks on the bottom - it would date it.

I don't know - I guess I assumed it was brass. I really don't know how to tell the difference between the two. I also thought it was Japanese. Which, of course, is why I'm posting here - "I know nothing."

Is it heavy for the size? Did you polish it?

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's brass. Yes, it's very heavy for its size and no, I did not polish it. I didn't think I should. Thanks again!

If you polish it, the genie may come out!

Oooooh! You think? I could use a genie! Just three wishes, that's all I want! Really, though, I thought you shouldn't polish an old brass thing like this. If ya'll tell me to (yes, I'm extremely Southern), I'll do it. You think I should?

Seriously don't polish it - but it looks like some one did at some point. If you have a bronze dealer in your area - I would see if they would look at it for you. The casting on the bottom looks more like bronze than brass. If you can scratch it in a inconspicuous place and if it is bronze it will look like gold underneath. It could be bronze IMO and if so is worth more. Worth a checking out - again IMO

Never polish brass or bronze unless you are keeping it for yourself. Let the new owner make that decision. Besides, a gentle rub is all that is needed to get that Genie to come out.

Don't polish it. I was only kidding! LOL!

If I could figure out how to insert a music file here and have it play the theme from "I Dream of Jeannie", I would have been tempted.
But it would probably would have irritated the heck out of everyone else!

Oh boy! A genie!! Thank you! Okay, so I did a tiny little scratch and it is sparkly gold looking under there. Hmmmm. Guess I should try to find a bronze dealer, huh? A spittoon, for real? Nah - this is a vase. I thought spittoons were always squattier looking. Is squattier even a word? I don't think so.

"Squattier" works for me!
Naw, only has a teeny resemblance in shape to a spitoon. Some of us just have a very irreverant sense of humor!

I can not tell, fonts make a difference. The circular shapes in the writing could be made into small rectangles. The Korean Alphabet, according the story I was told, was envisioned fitting in a window frame. I was a kid, okay? But basically it's a rectangular shape, with circles, unlike Japanese and Chinese.

Here is an interesting link:

But, they utilize a lot of "imported" characters.

BTW, I recall my Mom buying massive amounts of Brass while in Korea.

I know a jewelry expert can do the breakdown: isn't bronze zinc and copper and brass has iron in it?

hmmm.

Less helpful, more meditative, eh?

Believe bronze is an alloy of copper and tin and brass is an alloy of copper and zinc( in varying proportions.. There is no iron in it ( brass) or else a magnet would stick to brass which it does not.

Buyhigh,

You are right that there is no iron in brass or bronze. However, did you know not all alloys of iron are magnetic?

I did some quick internet research a few weeks ago when a girl on a private mail list stated that a well-known brand of stainless cookware (Revere Ware) had to be aluminum since a magnet didn't stick. She threw all hers out!

I KNEW they were stainless and quickly posted a link to that list showing that certain stainless, #305 and #316 do indeed contain iron but are not magnetic. Those two varieties are primarily used for cooking utensils.

Here's the link if anyone is interested:

I also found out that the reason stainless does not oxidize. It is absolutely amazing:

Here are a few URLs describing different brass and bronze alloys:

Nope - did not know that since I never tried sticking a magnet to the Revere Ware when I owned it - No reason to since I knew it was stainless steel with a copper plated bottom. Will check out the sites you mention.
