Okay, here's a question for ya's. lol! Whats the difference between a beligum waffle and a regular waffle. The shape? Sparkz, since you are pretty good on appliances...is there anything I should know about a vintage waffle iron. Its got the original cloth cord?

As a big waffle fan, I was going to reply and say that I think the only difference is the size... but not wanting to guess, i did a little poking around:

Hopefully they ask that question at pub trivia tonight!

The holes in a Belgian waffle are deeper and bigger than the ones in a regular one...
Lucy
P.S. They're very good with orange syrup. Here's the recipe: 1/2 cup frozen OJ concentrate, 1/2 cup butter, 1 cup sugar. Mix together and bring to a simmer.

Round waffle, square holes. At least that's what mine has. OTOH, what would Toastmaster know about Belgium?

Neroter12...Look for any obvious signs of fraying or exposed copper wire. There will be a small piece of cardboard type material that has slots to accomodate the prongs of the plug and it is the cover for the base of the plug. Remove that cover and examine the copper wire that is attached to each prong with screws. Make sure it looks neat and none of the strands from the black wire are touching the strands from the white wire. If they are loosen the screw on one, remove the wire, twist it and reattach it and tighten the screw. This is about the only thing you need to worry about, other than physical damage to the cord itself. The female plug that attaches to the iron is seldom a problem unless it is cracked. I would worry more about a cracked ceramic insulator inside the heating element in the iron itself. I usually check for opens and shorts with an ohmeter first, but if the plug looks o.k., try to fire it up. Plug it into a multi-output strip with a circuit breaker in it, such as the type used for computers and periferals. Use the on-off switch on the outlet strip to turn on the iron the first time. Do NOT ever test an unknown appliance, especially a vintage one, by plugging it directly into a wall outlet. Always use a breaker protected strip and it's on-off switch.

Wow Sparkz, thanks so much for that valueable information!! I would have had no qualms about just plugging it in!! Which I was going to do after cleaning it up and then throw some batter on it and see what it did. - I did have them plug it in at the thrift store where I bought it. It heated up okay, but smelled a little bit - you know, that old appliance smell when something hasnt been turned on in awhile?
I swear, I dont know why I buy appliances for resale!!! It is so much more trouble than it is worth half the time unless you REALLY (read sparkz...lol) know what you're doing! But it just looked so vintage and odd to me. I think because its a double one and has the gauges on top? I dont know....
Anyway, thanks all for the help.

Typical... We're talking about food and Sparkz just HAS to come in and be sensible.
Anyway, your waffler isn't for Belgian waffles. Looks like the standard restaurant kind to me. They are, by the way, generally very substantial and of good quality. Have to be to stand up to the demands of a resaturant. Who made it?
Here's a picture of the inside of the Belgian kind.
