Becasue a lot of people take their vacations at this time.

I find that things pick up again after the Labor Day weekend.

It's called compulsive collecting, and it's an illness, very much like compulsive gambling. It doesn't mean that someone is insane - it's a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

There's someone in my apartment building who's elderly now. Earlier in life, she collected newsprint and aluminum foil. By the late 80's, she had switched to bottles and cans, allegedly for the 5-cent deposit, but she brings them home and stores them like a squirrel gathering nuts - fills the apartment completely, end to end, wall to wall, with no path or tunnel. She's been trapped both inside and outside the apartment. Repeated episodes where 911 has been called to rescue her, and the apartment's been completely cleaned out - then she fills it right up again like you wouldn't believe.

The social workers and the fire department say it's a very common phenomenon in NYC.

I feel sorry for this kid. Notice that the mother is working and making money to buy all this stuff on eBay. So, probably, if you met her, she wouldn't strike you as mentally ill.
That's what makes it a very tough problem to deal with. Compulsive collectors can come across as being perfectly normal otherwise.

And it's not a joke. There are a lot of famous examples of compulsive collectors who got trapped by all of their stuff and either suffocated or starved to death.

I know someone like the above and she does not even buy on e-bay. Would not know how to turn on a computer much less use one. All items have come from 30 years of garage sales. Never pays very much for anything and never did. Likes freebies mostly and uses store coupons to amass massive amounts of items (some wind up being free) The 3 bedroom house with double garage is stacked with boxes and stuff halfway up the walls and in places there are only narrow aisles to walk through. NO one -not even her immediate family is allowed to enter. Impossible to clean ofcourse. One car parked in the driveway is in the same condition with only the driver's seat empty. She drives it a couple times a week, I might add. She appears perfectly normal and does not even recognize that she has a severe problem. There was a program on TV not too long ago and I think they called this disorder hoarding.

we too used to have an elderly neighbor lady, Hazel VanOsdell was her name, that was a pack rat ... every room in her house had things piled high to the ceilings, with only a very narrow walkway left for her to get around ... she used to give my children candy at easter time, and she didnt' even notice the packaged candy was 1/8th eaten through from critters .... ugh. ... when she needed to be taken out of her house, it took the city workers at least 4 dumptruck loads to clean out her house, then they needed to fumigate it and exterminate it. .... wow, she was something else!

The woman I know who does the hoarding leaves the front door open to air it out because the musty smell is overpowering at first. That is how I got in because I walked in one day by mistake. Never did see the 2 extra bedrooms which were closed off but she said they were stacked to the ceiling with stuff and furniture.
Understand that some older women collect cats in the same way and frequently do not dispose of the dead bodies. You hear of reports where police and ASPC's enter houses where they find hundreds of cats ( many sick and diseased) living under horrible conditions.

Whats that song???

I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell

A good tune for this gal to sing while she slithers through her house looking for her mind.
