I recently received this email..Has anyone heard of this? I have mailed out over 2,000 packages in the same way.
Here is the email:
Hi. I recently bought a ring from you, and upon delivery I was charged $3.36 by the post office (because of improper packaging). I already paid $4.95 shipping and handling, and am wondering if you will please refund me the $3.36. thanks.
Any thoughts?

I checked his feedback and it excellent too! This is a total first and I don't know what to think. If he did incur this charge due to my improper packaging then I would pay the fee but come on what is up with the post office is this is the case.

Did you, by chance, use a Priority mailer turned inside out?
Reason I ask is someone sent me a package Media Mail in one and my postal clerk very nearly charged me for Priority. In my case the postage difference was $9.30.

Hi Lucy-Actually It was in a Manila envelope heavily wrapped in bubble wrap-sent first class with Stamps.Com hide postage label. It was properly taped up exactly the same as all my other packages...

Hi Junebug,
That's VERY strange! I never heard of it.
Long shot here... Did the package come open enroute and the PO repackage it?? (Which even if they did I don't see where the extra charge would come in but like I said, it's a long shot.)
I agree with Tom on this one. They might be fishing for a refund of your handling charge.

I have been using postage through PayPal with almost all Priority Mail. Haven't any problems. Now wirg Discounnt Shipping Insurance, (DSI) on line, I don't have go to the PO. Ot sound to me as Lucy said, maybe the PO couldn't read the bar code.

Did you use eDC with FIRST CLASS??
Some of the PO folks don't know that this is NOW A-OK, as long as the package is EITHER:
1) A box /OR/
2) An envelope centerTHICKNESS 3/4" thick!
THANKS to BIZ for picking up on Ralphie's brain-fart!

Actually, to correct you Tom, it has to be 3/4" thick at the thickest point. The whole package doesn't have to be 3/4" thick.

Did you ask the buyer what was meant by improper packaging? Surely the psot office would give some explanation if they wished to collect an additional fee.

Thanks all-I always make sure the packages are 3/4 at the thickest point as Bizzy points out and use delivery confirmation.
I did email the buyer back..I asked them to scan per tomwii suggestion and please tell me provide an explanation as to what was improper about the packaging so that I can use it as a reference for the future and then I would give a refund for the amount they were charged. I think that seems fair. We'll see what he emails me back with.

I've found it depends on the Post Office. My local PO requires it to be 3/4" thick all the way around (in other words...in a box) or they will 'x' out the eDC. I've argued with them to no avail on this one.
If they receive one that isn't, they will bump the price up to Priority costs and charge the recipient.
Junebug....is it possible whatever you used to make it 3/4" thick flattened out before it was delivered? (I've seen this happen is why I ask).

I'll be waiting to hear what the buyer says. The postage of $3.36 is equivalent to first class for a 13 ounce package.
That's one mighty heavy ring!

Something doesn't make sense to me.
First, how did you ship the package? First Class, Parcel Post, Priority? Did you have tracking or insurance.
I think I might have figured it out. You sent the package out first class under an ounce at .37 with a non-machineable surcharge at .12 cents. That makes your actual postage at .49 cents. You state you bubble wrapped the ring. This likely made your package too thick for first class. The post office automatically upgraded the parcel to priority. Under an ounce priority is $3.85.
$ 3.85
- .49
-------
$3.36 what the post office charged the recipient for postage due.
This issue once you do the math, does sound legite.

This is from the USPS web site.
First-Class Mail® Parcels - Envelopes and small packages weighing 13 ounces or less. Applies only to boxes or envelopes measuring at least 3/4” at thickest point.
Do you think the postal clerk didn't see you had paid for postage because you hid it? The label printing is very small and if they don't look closley enough they would miss that you had paid and hid the amount. Have your buyer scan your label for you if they will so that you can see it. BTW Don't you have a copy of the label you printed? If so look at it.

Stone's assessment seems plausable. I, however, personally think the mailman just needed some beer money.

Say, Libra--off topic: I've been on jury duty all day and saw your message in the other thread suggesting RT for the troll posting. I agree with you. You are right. Had I thought it through more carefully, that might be what I'd have done.
By the way, where IS the troll thread? Was it deleted while my back was turned?!

Roadsmith,
I was scheduled for jury duty today also. When I called in at 6:30 yesterday, I learned my group had been excused. Guess they'll get me next time.
As far as the thread being deleted, I can't think of anything in it that was against CG. Guess we'll never know unless Vendio volunteers the info.

Roadsmith- Wow! I didn't realize it was gone until you brought it up. I think it would be very appropriate to put it in the RT. Most posters don't do that only certain ones. That's all I will say. It would be interesting to see what the response is.
Did you get on a trial? If so I hope it is interesting. I was on jury duty only once. Got picked for a trial but I knew the attorney for one side and the person doing the sueing was the owner at the antique mall that I had a booth. So of course I was rejected. I wonder what the chances of that was.

Libra: No, I didn't get on a trial. Drove two hours via those !@^#$$#@ Calif. freeways to Riverside, essentially sat with 200 others in a big auditorium, watched a video on how the jury system works, talked to people around me. We were told to take a 3-hour "break" and come back. Came back, told to take a 30-minute break, came back, sat around. We in Group A not needed for a trial were sent home finally and don't have to go back. I dunno--seems like a rather inefficient system to me but how else could it work?
