From another board today:

They are tired of messing with the sellers page so they are now messing with the "buyers" pages.

The new and improved "buy hub" will include changes such as changing the word "search" to "buy".

Now who's bright idea is that

If I want to search and I'm a newbie am I going to click on a button that says "buy"?

And, if I just found what I wanted what if I click on the "buy" instead of the "bid" button? Well, I just left the page I was looking at and planning on bidding on, that's what

What is Ebay going to come up with next

The folks at eBay have too much time on their hands! What a dumb change!

Just what happens when the marketing people are in control. Too much re-arranging of the fluff and not enough attention to the substance. That means that they are keeping the goose that shits the golden eggs looking really pretty, but no one is assigned to making sure it doesn't starve to death.

The new and improved "buy hub" will include changes such as changing the word "search" to "buy".

I have read this sentence over and over. WT*, now I am 100% convinced that the "powers that be with ebay" have their brains located in their feet and have been doing too much walking.
From my lame dictionary:
Buy - to obtain in exchange for money
Search - to look in order to find something
We have all had problems with "buyers" not being able to read/comprehend what is clearly stated in our auction listings.... so how are these same buyers going to be able to understand, when they click buy, they are in fact searching, and when they bid they are neither buying or searching?
What about a person who is new to the ebay site, they can not find a "search" button like all the other websites that they go to, all they see is buy. But they do not necessarily want to "buy", they want to "search" to see if there is anything that they wish to "buy". To most people, when you click "buy" you have made a commitment to purchase, you are done shopping, not beginning to.
Please someone teach ebay the KISS method. Stop them before they rewrite/redefine the english language.

Further info, Quoted from another board:

Date: 09/16/04 Time: 09:11:42 AM PDT

In the next few weeks, we will introduce our new Buy Hub. This is the second stage of a long-term project to make eBay easier and more intuitive to use by organizing the numerous tools, education content, and other resources into logical landing pages. The new Buy hub will be the starting point for buying-related tools and activities. The recently-introduced Sell hub [http://www2.ebay.com/aw/marketing.shtml#2004-07-07161338] was the first stage of this project.

Also included will be updates to the top navigation bars and bottom footers of all eBay pages.

Buy Hub
As part of this project, the current Browse button found at the top of almost every eBay page will be renamed to "Buy". By clicking on Buy, you will see a new Buy hub page which looks very similar to the current Browse page, and includes a search box as well as additional buying-related links and features. Additions include:

-More links to categories;
-Access to buying reminders from My eBay;
-New shortcuts to your Favorite sellers, searches & categories from My eBay;
-Alerts when an item on your Watch list is ending soon.

Navigation Bar Changes
The Search button currently in the navigation bar will be replaced with a search box that will be located in the top-right of almost every page. An Advanced Search link will be available right underneath the search box, which you can use to access options currently found by clicking the Search button, such as Find Items and Find Members.

The Help button will also be added back into the main navigation bar to make it more prominent and easier to find. Please note that these changes will not affect the Stores minimized header.

Footer Links
The links at the bottom of most pages will be updated as well, including:

-New shortcuts to your Favorite sellers, searches & categories from My eBay;
-Consistent links across various pages so that you can always find important information.

To preview the upcoming changes, please click here [http://pages.ebay.com/preview/iatd/index.html?ssPageName=CMDV:AB]. We have also started a thread on the Bidding discussion board for members to leave their comments. Please click here to access the thread.

The other hubs to be developed over the months ahead include a hub for Community resources, as well as smaller projects such as adding a landing page to My eBay for visitors who are not signed in and a more efficient Help hub. To learn more about this initiative to make eBay easier and more intuitive to use, you can the read our recent Product Strategy article [http://pages.ebay.com/community/chatter/2004september/redesign.html?ssPageName=CMDV:AB] in September's online Chatter newsletter.

Regards,
eBay

Another quote from today:

Looks Like I jumped the gun.

They meant the "browse" button (I hope) and not the Search button.

Still anything other than our bid or BIN buttons is a bad thing and will redirect users to another area.

Is browsing the next to go??

Another post from today on the other board:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Yup....
I wonder when Webster will add the new meaning to the word "Browse"..... Never knew that "Browse" meant "Buy"
... Except as wishful thinking on the sellers part.
Seems that with the elimination of the categories and now this, there is definitely the smell of a conspiracy to get rid of Browsing altogether. I think some marketing guy really has a fetish for this and is on the warpath to do away with the concept altogether.
I'd love to get some psycho-analysis done on this whole thing from a shrink. I think the results would be staggering! "
