Friend talked me into eliminating Compaq cookies with Spybot ( Spybot had it on the list) due to all the popups. This resulted in a window popping up everytime I logged on informing me the pathway to BackwWeb was gone. Had to click OK to continue. Went into Spybot recovery and the initial cookies are back waiting to be checked for deletion. However now when I log on, I get a different window that states "runner error" Target dll Back web dll ( C: program files etc etc error code 126. Any way of correcting this error so that the window does not appear and I do not have to click OK to continue? PS am computer illiterate and would need to be walked through this if anyone has the answer.

buyhigh, they might have something on it at the HP/compaq website. I think you'd have to remove backweb from the registry as spybot might only remove the dll's and other files.
But I couldnt walk you through it and its not something you want to mess with, without specific instructions.
Sorry, try the HP website. They own and run that backweb software and should be able to tell you how to either restore it or get rid of it entirely.

The first time you ran Spybot, it should have detected Backweb as spyware and prompted you for a full removal, which includes several entries in your registry. Yet you say you only removed the cookies? I would be tempted to restore the cookies and get it running correctly again and then try to remove Backweb altogether through. Hold up though till Glassgrl shows up and mulls this over. She may have a better idea. I have removed Backweb Lite on two different occasions, and it's only a one click operation. Spybot does the entire removal and leaves no trace behind.

do NOT download what is on the page when it opens up! hang on a second and the download will start automatically. there's some kind of weird spy program they advertise, just ignore it.

Yes, I have XP. When I downloaded Spybot, Compaq was on the list of recommended cookies to place on the search and destroy list but there was a disclaimer stating that the company had installed this on their computers. There was no mention of the word backweb until I logged in again and the popup showed. However when I click ok, I can proceed. The only time the cookies appeared were on the day I downloaded Spybot and checked Compaq along with double click etc etc

I deleted all the original cookies I restored on Spybot and now the popup when I log on goes back to "Runner error invalid BackWeb application and an ID number. If I click OK I can proceed. Guess I will have to live with that since any download involves more time than I have right now. Guess it does not disturb the running of my computer or it hasn't for the past 7 months. Thanks people.

Yes it was BackWeb lite by the way along with a couple of netscape entries. I gather it was not just the cookies I eliminated

Backweb Lite is a program used by many reputable manufacturers such as H.P./Compaq and Kodak. It's purpose is to allow them to install updates invisibly that they think you may need. There is no malicious intent by the manufacturers. But, the fact that they can manipulate the files on your computer remotely, and install files without your knowledge actuall qualifies this program as a Trojan Virus. Spybot is giving them the benefit of the doubt and being kind when they classify it as spyware. The big danger is, if they can access your computer with this software, so can a hacker or script kiddee. I personally would rather visit their site and download updates manually rather than have an open hole with a neon welcome sign for hackers on my computer. Contact H.P. and get step by step instructions for completing the removal of this program.

Q. After running Spybot, I now get a small window with the following message whenever I start my computer: Runner error. Invalid backweb application id ######. What does this mean and how do I get rid of it?
BackWeb is a generic downloading tool used by various software companies that incorporate it to download data such as product updates. BackWeb is capable of collecting information from your PC and delivering it to the collection site. Whenever you connect to the Internet, BackWeb also connects to retrieve advertisements, which are then displayed on your browser as popups.
Here's how to get rid of it: Try uninstalling using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
If there does not appear to be an uninstall program, try C:\program files\BackWeb\ and remove this directory.
Run MSCONFIG (Start, Run, type MSCONFIG), check the Startup tab and disable anything related to BackWeb. Look for any .EXE file starting with BackWeb and delete it.
