I was at an auction preview today and they had some mint condition rolled up paper billboard signs I guess about 4 feet by 6 feet size. The sort you would see outside of Grocery stores back in the 1940s 1950s on the side walls or in the front sometimes. These are from the factory and are for different name brand products like loafs of bread or cookies, crackers etc. I did some searching on ebay but was not able to come up with anything similar. Anyone have a clue on value or a good place to research this? TIA

I guess I'd research Ebay or Google first, but I'd be tempted to bid on them, with some sort of $$ limit set for myself. Do you think these are FROM the 40s and 50s or copies of some? Do they have brand names that are recognizable even today? How many are there?
Is the rest of the stuff in the auction all from the same place; is it from an old store going out of business?
It definitely sounds interesting to me--but some here may have different thoughts on it.

If they are from the 40s/50s, in good condition and have interesting graphics or typography they will most likely appeal to a collector of advertising. A poster that size would be stunning as a mural in a retro kitchen or a restaurant.

Check out other auctions for products with that brand name. See how serious the collectors are. Large advertising can be tricky. Most collectors have their collections in their home. Unless they have a rec room, where will they display a large poster? Another thing to consider is how good is the art work?

Thanks for the advice and good suggestions. I do think there were some brands that are still in business. I am about 100% sure they are original, they are coming from a large estate that had lots and lots of old items and good stuff, there were also some other large paper items in the mailing tubes, dates were very hard to read but looked like 1951 or 1952. I will try to do some more research.

I know one product that would be good. Welch's grape juice. I had a RPPC of the welch's grape juice factory. I put it on and thought who would bid on this. I and got $15.00 then I looked at the bidders and one bidder only bid on welch's items.. It is interest what people bid on. The one who won the auction wasn't such a big collector.

Photo,
VERY COOL IDEA. After spending the summer at garage sales collecting 40's and 50's stuff, I have decided to redecorate(a common occurence at my house) my kitchen in to retro 50's. Love that MURAL THING!

One of my nephews and his wife bought a house that was built in 1961. Now that is just yesterday to me since it is the year after I graduated from college. I had to laugh when they said they were decorating with "really OLD stuff" from the 60s. The kitchen has framed food ads from 60s magazines and I found them some ads from the 60s with babies for the nursery. They are so serious about keeping everything the correct vintage that it makes me smile. In a large kitchen those posters could almost be wallpaper.
If Postcardman is able to buy them it would be fun to see some pictures.

check out the movie posters thru google, there is a site that puts all of those posters together and they go for a large sum of money, my husband brought one home a while back and I was furious at the price he paid for it, but I sold it for a nice $75 profit, some are cloth and linen backed etc., Infact now that I think about it that company sells on ebay, but they have a very large web page of other listings too.
