"British Online Auction Site Launches in U.S.

By Ina Steiner
AuctionBytes.com
September 24, 2004

Online-auction site eBid said due
to "phenomenal" growth in the UK, it will launch a site in the U.S. and will add six other international sites in France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Canada and Australia over the next 2 years. eBid's announcement said the company is the UK's second largest online-auction site.

eBid, founded in March 1999, charges sellers no listing fee or commission fees. (Revenues are generated via optional featured extras.) eBid predicted U.S. and UK members would trade with each other, and referenced its online payment partner PPPay.com as a way to make convenient cross-currency transactions."

I caught an Overstock commercial on TV the other day and they were promoting "O" and in this case it wasn't Oprah. I first thought it was an ad for "O" magazine and then when I realized it was for Overstock I wondered how long it's going to be before Oprah sues them for using the "O" logo. She's got the $$ to take them on and she's been using O for quite some time now.

Ouch..there goes Esnipe for Overstock..
"Q:
Can an auction receive a time extension?

A:
If an auction receives a bid within 10 minutes of the auction closing time, the auction will be extended for an additional 10 minutes. All bidders will receive an auction extension notice via e-mail."

God Bless everyone in Florida!

Overstock auction seems promising, if they can avoid the same mistakes that Yahoo and Amazon have made.

eBid has an established UK site. Will be interesting to see if they can break into other country's auction markets.

THERE IS NO OPT OUT on this....

What a crappy idea! I've already posted on their forums about this and nobody has answered.

Also there is no contact feature. You have to call Overstock if you have a question. So far the message board is almost nonexistant.

Does that mean if I win items there, I can pay with "PeePee"

Overstock has 42 total items in the Collectible category. I know it is new but it has a looooong way to go to reach any kind of critical mass. As nice as it would be to have alternatives to eBay it will be a steep curve for anyone to catch up with the eBay volume. Maybe people who list new stuff that is available in larger quantities might do OK because their stock will be easy to find in a smaller field and it can be listed on eBay as well.

I tried the site on two browsers on the Mac and one on the PC. It seems to work on the PC but I kept getting "Done, but with errors on page" messages. The Mac IE was a disaster area and the Mac Safari sort of works but a lot of the links are dead. Before Tomwii tells us that no one cares if it works on the Mac, I want to point out that our money spends just as well as the PC user's money.

A rather strange note is the picture of the seller on each item. Some show none, some have obviously taken it as an opportunity to have some fun (unless of course there really is a baby selling on O), but what I find most surprising is that some of these seem to be real pictures of the seller and they don't always make me want to buy.

I wish them the best but don't think they will be a real threat to eBay anytime soon.

Hmmm. I didn't see a place to put my personal picture there. Now that would be a way to chase buyers off.

This "I want to be your friend" thing. What is this, a dating service??

One ex-wife is enough.

it's a disaster is what it is to me! What were they thinking?

How juvenile can it be? "I want to be your friend" in an auction?

Friends don't let friends sign up for something like this is what came to mind!

What was that auction about that hooker that said she would be your *friend*? Even her husband would be your *friend*. Or her kids LOL!

I just figured I'd wait and see how it goes and go ahead and register my Ebay name and reserve my place in case it turned out to be a viable site. Yes, they are very new and don't have many listings (yet).

eBid sounds more promising and ppp.pay sounds like PayPal stuttering doesn't it?

As far as the BIG O, well after checking into it, I see that Oprah has already been to trademark infringements with a European Magazine called O. So now she's trademarked O Magazine, but can't do diddly squat about the O in itself.

We all know about the BIG O don't we?

glassgrl: someone tells me that is some type of "networking" thing. They are developing a help group. There will be listing software available to download tomorrow.

And they are spending $1,000,000 on advertising!!

eBay, are you listening??

glassgrls. The "friend" thing is the way you can build the auction network to quality for the $50,000 so I am told.
They are releasing a free Windows application called O-Listing tomorrow. You will be able to list multiple auctions. They are now running TV ads and feeBay has taken all mention of Overstock off its discussion boards.
