eBay Bars Sellers from Ending Auctions in Final Hours
By Ina Steiner

eBay will change its policy on when sellers may end or change their
listings. Currently eBay allows a seller to cancel bids and end an
item at any time under certain conditions, such as when an item is
lost or broken. They are however prevented from making changes to a
listing during the final 12 hours.

Beginning next week, eBay sellers will no longer be able to end a
listing in the final 12 hours, except to sell to the current high
bidder. Oddly, eBay's announcement did not say what sellers should do
if an item is lost, broken or unavailable for sale.

eBay said under the new policy, sellers may still cancel specific bids
they find unwelcome, but may no longer utilize the "cancel all bids
and end this item" feature. Sellers may still end listings during the
final 12 hours if the item does not have any bids.

hi mcjane ... yes, i sure perked up reading that this morning with my coffee, and was *going* to post it here, just like you did.

it is certainly something to take note of, when in the RARE instance, any of us want to or feel to make that kind of move on ebay, as sellers.

Also, PayPal is increasing its Buyer Protection from $500.00 to $1000.00 also in that Auction Bytes. I believe this takes effect in Nov.

The policy does not make sense to me...If I cancel a bid, and the item has no bids, then I can end the auction, what's the difference? I've ended perhaps 5 auctions early out of thousands, and that is because I've made a mistake that was brought to my attention...I guess sellers abuse this, but it is useful if there is an error.

The reason for this is quite simple. Too many sellers are listing items for $1 or less without a reserve when they should be listing them for $20.00 for example. And when the listing doesn't make the $20.00 that they actually will sell it for, they cancel the bids in the last 5 mins of the auction, then cancel the auction, just to relist it and try again. Now those sellers are going to have to list there items at prices that they are confortable for them to sell their items at. This should in return drive some prices back up, as these sellers also won't be able to manipulate the auctions around their competition.

stone-Ive never had anyone cancel an auction I was bidding on-but if a seller did that to me,I would be quite irrated, and probably go to another seller and not deal with him again.I think the seller would realize that if he kept doing this, he would lose business
