Hijack program? Is that program for when you have been looking at websites and a program comes in and messes up the computer? If so, how can I get it? I have been researching on the computer a lot the last week or so and some adware got in and refuses to delete by using the Add/Delete Program. Now that computer is locked up and I can't get on the internet. I am using the downstairs computer until I have time to deal with it.
ADDITIONALLY! You need to have Spybot and JavaCools Spyware Blaster (which installs withing Spybot) that keeps you from getting into the web pages that DO cause trouble.
Whenever I get About Blank, I know that I didn't want to see that web page to begin with. You will have something like 3183 blocked websites and database entries (cookies) that will never download onto your computer.
The forums at Spyware info are very helpful.
"It's now possible for a "rogue" website to actually embed trojans, worms and/or viruses directly into a web page. In the past, pages that offer seemingly attractive downloads which contain such malware required you to click to start any download to your computer. Now it's become automatic, using features in the Windows operating system known as scripting. These scripts can load programs without you knowing, and then they run immediately. All you have to do is visit the site, without doing anything besides viewing the page."

Thank goodness for all the great help we get from glassgirl and all the others that help us not so smart computer people. I am probably one of the dumbest I will attest to that. I have said this before I can't wait until I deplete my ebay merchandise and I can get back to webtv.

Kasue...Some so called spyware programs are actually spyware programs themselves. To top it off, they charge you for the program. Click the links that Glassgrl gave you and download the programs she suggested and your spyware problems will be gone. Total cost = $0.00

thanz sparkz but actually there wasn't a link to Spybot or Spyware blaster, just to hijackthis. I didn't volunteer information that wasn't asked for just suggested it.
however, that doesn't keep the nefarious companies that sell spyware information from trying to trade on the legitimate spybot and spyware blaster names and devert unknowning folks to their website so they can make $$. Unless you know the exact url you're looking for these days you are likely to be diverted. I'm so used to knowing which is the "real" website and which is not by looking at how the url is written out, that I forget that not everyone necessarily knows.
It was apparent yesterday when I had someone over here at my house that is not computer savvy and wanted to do a search on something. I can scroll quickly through pages and pages of Google and know what looks like what I'm looking for and what is not. However she wanted to click on every link, every sidebar and if the "warning your computer is infected" popup had come up, she would of clicked on that one too. Sigh. Even my husband falls for that one.

I went to one of the original clickable links that glassgrl posted. I wasn't "diverted". I didn't see anything free like I hoped I would so I bought SpyCop. When I got there, I thought, "Well, she never actually said they were FREE." Now is that a spyware program that is legit or not? It was on the first site she suggested. I wish the links hadn't been posted at all if they weren't the links I needed to get the software like I asked. "First go here, Then go here, Then you will need this" There was software for sale all over the link. Now I am stuck with SpyCop for $40 because they don't refund. Thanks for nothing, Ms Smug.

ka sue - you want "spybot search & destroy" ...i asked for a link last week to send to a friend because I wanted to make sure I didn't send a link the "bad" stuff like "spycop". SPYBOT S&D is absolutely free and works great..do a google and make sure you see "search & destroy"

That was your question.
And for that I sent you to HijackThis {free program}
Hijack deletes programs from running in the background.
IF you had gone to or posted your results at the forum for analyzing like they ask you to, they would of recommended a free spyware program.
Ah yes. If you had gone to the forum you would of seen at the top of the page "New here? Read this FAQ before you do anything else." which has a direct link to spybot.
A spyware program does not necessarily STOP a program from running whereas Hijack this tells you what is running in the background (unseen) and with one click, disables the program.
Spyware Programs are primarily for cookies.
Hijack is for stopping programs.
You said your computer was locked up with adware. For that, I still think HJT was the best option.

Thanks for the info GG. Last night I tried to download Infranview from ZDNET and they installed a KDX program that allowed my system to be used by their net ring. Boy was I PO'd! Could not get that thing to un-install. But I think HJT finally snubbed it out. And Tomwii gave me a good link for Infranview that had no background spyware in it!
I'm sure glad SOMEONE is keeping up with all the great freeware progs out there. Keep up the good work.
And Ms Kasue,"***Thanks for nothing, Ms Smug**", sorry you had trouble, but please don't blame GG just because you did not know what you were doing. When someone tries to help, you need to ask more questions if you are confused. We all try to help out here, but if you flame the helpers, they will go away and we will all left in the dark!
I wouldn't worry too much about it if it was recommended on one of the sites I sent you to, they pretty much keep it under control there. I think the new ones they're advertising are just that, a way to finally pay for their time and services. These sites have done a huge amount of work for no pay.

My husband and I, who are both full time e-commerce folks, run AdWare, and SpyBot both, along with Norton Utilities/Anti Virus. We run the FREE versions of AdWare and SpyBot, and they have done a great job, and are those programs recommended on the Web Master Tech Geek sites, which my husband is, and visits quite often.
NATURALLY, as with the anti-virus programs, you have to keep these programs updated, as new ways around them are forever coming out.

AdAware
not Adware
{{{MsSmug}}}
but, I wanted to thank kasue
because I just now found all the pinned "how to run SpyBot, Adaware, Spyware Blaster and HJT" so I won't have to continously type all that stuff in

Since a lot of these proggies are really for pc-wonks who know the meaning of such technical jargon as: WINDOWS, or BROWSER, or REGEDIT, I've always run scared from them -- especially the ones that warn ya that if ya push the wrong thingy, yer PC will turn into an attacking, rabid PRETZEL
I've NEVER gotten a virus, nor trojan, nor ANY form of ANY crap-ware on my PC -- and I've been fiddling since 1981

hey ... i am thinkin' HERE we are having a failure to communicate!? LOL ... whatsupwithalldis?
gg, i'm with tomwii as far as not understanding a lot of the technical lingo that some techs think ought to be understandable, (i even read thru those FAQs you told kasue about and i thought, 'huh!?' on half of what the author was saying) ...
AND your 'Pinned How-To How to
you know, how'd you do that anyway?' also left me thinkin', "huh?" LOL ...
