I registered last Sunday and listed one item on Overstock. Today, I have received two strange emails with the subject line, "XyZ Wants to be Your Friend." In the email body, it has a header, "Network Invitation" and then goes on to read, "XyZ has invited you to become their friend. Click on the link below to accept or decline this invitation."

What is up with this? Can this be shut off so I don't get these emails? I am clueless what it is, so if anyone has any info, please clue me in.

Rusty

It is sort of a feedback system. The more friends you have the higher rated you are. I also saw something about a contest. The prize is $50,000. I don't know how the winner is chosen, but it has something to do with your number of friends.

yes it can be shut off - you can thank me really!

sign in, go to your home page, go to preferences....scroll down to email notifications, click "change", and then you can uncheck the last box - send my network invites via email.

they say they still show up in your mailbox over there but I haven't spent enough time over there to find one.

I'm getting them several times a day. I don't need no friends, sometimes I don't even want the ones I got. I haven't even had time to post on Overstock yet, maybe next week.

After you have turned off the eMail invitations, the friends thing will still show up on your Home Page if you click on "invite friends". Just hit decline. Friends I've got, it's money I need.

about Overstock - I got my invoice for the one item I listed ... will they REALLY charge my credit card for the $.28???? I don't want to be a deadbeat but I don't intend to list there again until it gets going..won't it cost them more to process the bill than they will receive?? Besides, I heard SOME powersellers got a credit for $25 listings or something like that...I never received any offer like that!!

It just seems to me that the "friend" thing is a rather stupid gimmick that means absolutely nothing about a seller or buyer. I've been hearing good things about Overstock lately, and I did register with them but haven't listed anything yet. This friend thing doesn't jibe with the good things I've heard about O.

What possible use can it be to a seller or buyer?

I get those weird friend requests, too. I believe it's like Friendster. Has anyone heard of this? Friendster was this network where you could sign up your friends and you'd get them in your network as well as their friends so all of a sudden there are just 1 or 2 degrees of separation. It's all free and really does nothing more than build a community where you could post questions and write messages and see the personal profiles to see what everyone was about.

When I saw Overstock, it was interesting to see them trying to incorporate that sort of thing with an auction site. I'm not sure what sort of benefit it will have to have a lot of friends, though I suppose it could be likened to a feedback system. The only thing is that since anyone can ask to be your friend, it doesn't really mean much. I have 4 or 5 friends and have not sold one thing! I just accept for some reason, though I agree with MAH about not really needing too many more friends! I just got rid of some that I didn't want, either!

NEGLUS- LOL! I can't believe it would be worth the fees and time to charge $.28! I'm no deadbeat, either, but I would feel like bailing out on that charge, too!

Is there any way, when you register, to add a line to your home page which reads " Send me $10.00 and I'll be your friend"? Bet that would cut down on the email requests.
