Another one bites the dust....competition to paypal = ??
Dear xx,
We regret to notify you that we are closing the Yahoo! PayDirect from HSBC service, effective November 22, 2004.
You may continue to use your current PayDirect account until November 22, but you will not be able to open any new accounts, nor will you be able to send money to or receive money from a person who is not currently a PayDirect customer. After November 22, 2004, you will not be able to use your account for any new transactions. 'Send money' transactions initiated prior to November 22 will be completed if recipients accept funds within 30 days after send date; thereafter transactions will be canceled. You can still view your account records and withdraw any pending balances until February 15, 2005. After February 15, you can only access your PayDirect account to review past transactions and/or close your account.
The PayDirect service and web site will be completely discontinued on May 15, 2005.
You currently have a balance in your PayDirect account. If you wish to close your PayDirect account (including any WorldCard ATM card subaccounts you may have created) and have your funds returned as quickly as possible, please login to the service and follow the steps given there. When your PayDirect account is closed any WorldCard ATM cards you might have sent will be canceled and your funds will be transferred to your linked bank account.
A full timeline outlining these dates is included below:
November 22, 2004 - After this date, you will no longer be able to send money or add funds to either your PayDirect account or to any WorldCards you have sent. However, you will be able to transfer your balance to your bank account and close your PayDirect account. Recipients of Worldcard ATM cards may continue to withdraw funds you have put into a sub-account prior to this date but you will not be permitted to put new funds in a sub-account.
February 15, 2005 - All PayDirect accounts that have not already been closed by the account owner will automatically be closed, and the balance will be refunded. You will not be able to conduct any further transactions. The PayDirect web site will still be available for you to view your account history.
May 15, 2005 - The Yahoo! PayDirect from HSBC service will be completely discontinued, and you will no longer be able to access the web site.
Thanks for using Yahoo! PayDirect. We regret that the service will no longer be available. If you have any questions, please contact Customer Care at [email protected].

HSBC is one of the world's largest and most widespread bank groups and already offers cheap international and domestic p2p transfer using it's internal network. Likely big brother provisions of the US Patriot Act have more to do with closing Yahoo! PayDirect than profitability.

Yahoo paydirect is not that popular, used in its auction but nowhere else.
Yahoo is the one who decides to discontinue the feature.
Now there is also AOL direct!

I wonder if this is a step toward closing the failing Yahoo auction site??
