I caught parts of the show and thought it was pretty interesting. But I suggest everyone here read Barbara Ehrenreich's "Nickel and Dimed in America" for the real story. She decided to try to LIVE on some minimum-wage jobs with no family or friend subsidies and no bank account to draw from--waitressing, Merry Maid, nursing home attendant, WalMart. It's a quick read and fascinating--and I think it should be on the desk of every Congressman.

i have heard of that book,i will see if i can get a copy online.
This show lasted 2 hours,i hope they will rerun it someday, may be Halloween or Thanksgiving, when all walmart employees can afford is to gnaw on some turkey neck!
It traces the story of Walmart ,an interview with the current CEO on the biggest sex discrimination they are facing and how much walmart spent on employee healthcare(less is better, none is best).Women make less, they were told men have family to support while some women are single mothers .
A fascinating Walmart in China and how the chinese LOVE to troop to Walmart and shop for grocery and how the employees are drilled the walmart way, what sells and what does not sell in China etc.
An interview with a professor who has followed the effects of walmart for 20 years, when walmart moves in ,small stores go under in 3 months.Cities are fighting back with zoning laws to stop walmart from coming in.
They also show the union AFL-CIO trying to organise walmart employees.
You can see from the interview, the CEO is very much under pressure with all the issues but pleased with the intl progress they are making.
Very interesting.

I worked for Walmart in 1994 in Danville setting in the new Super Center. They promised Danville they would create over 600 new jobs. They worked us like dogs 70 and 80 hours a week. A lot got the flu and were told they had to show up for work or be fired,so many worked so sick they couldn't harly make it. After they opened the store, they let over 400 of the employees them had hired go. They had already let go most of the 200 they had in a nearby Walmart that they closed. At Thanksgiving I was told I had to work every holiday coming up so that their Favorite employees could be with their families. They had cut my hours down to 12 hours a week,I needed the job but it was costing me more in gas to come in the ungoddly hours they had given me so I told them to stick it. In ten years they have put out most of the business in Danville.

I worked for Walmart for almost 8 years. You feel trapped when working there because they pay you more than minimum wage (not much more, but more) and you feel like you can't survive anywhere else.
I hated working there. I was a cashier. I was told when I could go to the bathroom ~ I'm sorry, at 28 years old if I had to pee I knew I had to pee I should have been able to go when I wanted. I shouldn't have to ask some 17 year old CSM if i could go.
You would be sent on break after being there for an hour, lunch after 2 hours and then have to work 7 more hours with 1 15 minute break because it was convenient to them.
If you weren't one of the 'favorites' you were at the mercy of the managers who could care less about any of the needs of the people there.
I was (am) a single mother and had a child in day care. The day cares are only open here until 5 so I couldn't work past 5. When they woudl not work around that they cut me down to 10 hours a WEEK. Single mother. Family oriented business? Bull crap. Who can survive on 10 hours a week? No one.
Walmart claims to be all family oriented, that they care about the modern day family. The only family they care about is the Walton family.
I'm not a big fan of walmart. At all.

someday the Chinese will realise they cant just rise up and compete with Walmart in their own country.
They can work for Walmart for peanuts but no where to go for a better job.
How many Chinese entrepreneurs can start a business and compete with walmart in china??
How many chinese suppliers are tied to Walmart?
but then once upon a time, they said the same thing about Sears Roebuck.

LOL, Sparkz, just what I was thinking!
But if WalMart stores in China are stocked with cheap junk FROM China instead of from America, how would that work? Can't they buy their cheap junk over there for less than WalMart will want to charge??

i think walmart stores in china are competitive enough, recall that part when they were asking each other why the plaid shirts dont sell??
and the answer is chinese dont like plaids.
and the boss said, tell the buyers so they dont make the mistake next time.
so walmart buyers are dealing with chinese suppliers and buying enough to get good volume.
Besides they have merchandise other smaller stores do not have-the rotisserie chicken ,thats a showcase as shoppers watch how it works.
i love to hear what AFL-CIO game plan is to organise walmart employees!!
Walmart can afford to pay more ,if it has to raise prices,so be it,people will still come to Walmart.

WalMart in China?
It does seem like they could get it cheaper that at Wal Mart. But the situation could be being 'managed' - much like our situation with prescription drugs in this country.
American people could change this in a short period of time. But first, we have to get together. It doesn't seem like that is going to happen, though.

if the items are made in china and walmart sells them in china, they dont have to pay freight and with price of fuel being so high, there is some savings there.
With the items which are grown and consumed by local, they cant markup too much higher than the local merchants.Chinese goes shopping for grocery in open market everyday.

Also you have to figure in that Walmart is purchasing for their worldwide inventory which means huge volume discounts. They may sell for only a small percentage than the smaller retailer but they are purchasing at a MUCH lower price.

There are many small chinese merchants in China, they may operate a store,a booth or just street hawker. They go to the factory and pick up some merchandise ,so there is no volume discount for them.
THese entrepreneurs will have to mark their goods way below Walmart to survive.
What walmart gives, walmart takes away-walmart will provide jobs to the younger generation which just came out of school and some older ones to become regional and store managers but will wipe out the small businessmen just like here.
