The last time I tried selling in the UK, my images took too long to load, which probably explains why my hits were down. I just launched an auction and would appreciate any opinions on the images and listing. Please remember that I am html illiterate, so doing just this simple listing took me a bit of time.

personally I would reduce the size of the pics just a tiny bit and place them side by side. or do you use VD? then why not click to enlarge?
and the pics are very dark on my laptop screen. probably ok on my desktop screen though. I couldn't make out any of the detail of the dress.

Biz:
They look fine on both MY desktop & on Ralphie's LAPTOP...
Although I do like to keep our pics under 500 x 500, and <50, but yer pretty close there & yer pics load fast here in Tom-&-Ralphie's-Luxury-Bachelor-Pad...
Overall, ye might want to spiff-up just by CENTERING yer pics, thusly:

I love the doll dress patterns and I love to crochet. Just wish I could master using cotton thread and a very small needle! I have a very difficult time doing it.
Looks good to me. BTW, only one more chapter to go in the book. I expect to finish it this week. I read it on my lunch hour at work.

Thanks for fixing my link, Tom, and for the opinions. I'll try to center the pics next time.
Glassgrl -- These are launched at the UK site so I can use Vendio's imaging hosting, but nothing else. As for it looking dark, the picture is rather on the dark side. I tried to lighten it a bit, but was ruining the overall effect of the gown. I want it the gown to look as close to the original as possible. Thank you for alerting me, though, that it looks a bit dark on your laptop. I don't know how I could possibly fix it, though.
I've launched off a few more before reading how to center the pics. Let me know what your opinions, please.

Oh ... One other thing, the reason why I like the images to be large is because I would like the details of the dress to be seen. When I launch in the US, because I have Vendio resize the images and bidders can click to enlarge, I usually includes several photos of close-ups (if you take a look at some of my auctions, you'll see what I mean). But with launching out of the UK, I don't want too many images for bidders to have to load. So, by using larger images that can load quickly, a bidder can see the details of these beautiful gowns.
Cheryl -- I found on Ebay something that helps with keeping the tension correct with cotton crochet thread. It holds the balls of thread suspended so that the thread an unravel evenly as you crochet. When I'm using a very small hook (size 11-14), I use one of those magnifier glasses that hang from your neck. I am crocheting a very elaborate piece using size 20 cotton crochet thread and a size 11 needle, and I couldn't see the darn thing!

Bizzy - I think they look great. Good for you listing on the site. One thing I would mention though is your closing time. Did you mean to have them closing mid day?
I have to run out for a bit but if you leave your email address I'll do a quick template for you with side by side images and send it on over.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Thanks, Tom. I'll give it a try and hopefully not mess up too much. Your auctions look so good! I hope to have my auctions look that good in the future. But considering that I've only been selling for a little over a year now, I'm not doing too bad.

Thanks, Fenix. My e-mail address is [email protected]. I didn't mind closing midday on a Sunday. I do know that if I do well and continue to list on the UK site, then I'll have to schedule the auctions for the evening. Right now, I'm just trying to get my feet wet.

bizzy,
Sent your auction link over to a cousin of mine in the UK and he said that they were a tad slow but he waited because they were clear. I guess he is one of those people that hates blurry pictures. Go figure. Anyway, coming from him I would say you just got a compliment. (He is much more of a grouch that I am, not enough coffee!)

I enjoyed looking at your auctions. They are such beautiful patterns! Since you wanted to know...I'm in America....the photos loaded pretty quickly, they were bright and crisp, with excellent color and there was lots of detail. On the darker colors though (like the black engagement Diana dress) it was a little harder to see the detail. Could you include a close-up of an area on the darker colors? (just a thought) Your descriptions and TOS are very clear and you have lots of enthusiasm for your item. Great job!

Thanks so much for contacting your cousin for me, Kevin. I don't mind them being a little slow to load, as long as it isn't so long that no one will wait for the pics.
Thanks, Rivki. The problem was with the leaflet. The picture actually looks like that in the leaflet and there isn't much I could do with it (although I did try).

Since the subject of large vs small images has come up there is a simple way to have larger images that load faster. To do this you simply compress the image. I use Irfanview to do this. I am leaving links to two images one is 158 KB and the other is 20 KB. They look virtually identical. One is at 100% and the other is compressed to 40% using Irfanview.

http://imagehost.vendio.com/bin/imageserver.x/00000000/getalife/rainbowb.jpg
The first image is 20 KB and the second is 158 KB.

Bizzy,
I like your auctions. The photos are clear and appealing.
I wouldn't worry too much about whether they're centered or not. I don't think that matters much to buyers, so long as the photos are good ones.
I'm on a DSL line, so I can't guage the download time on a regular dial-up. But I got the photos instantly - no waiting at all.
I really liked the text on the Princess Di one.
Well done.
Maybe you should list that one in the US, too (?).
I think Di has universal appeal.

Getalife -- I love that site. Tom gave us the link a couple of months ago and that's where I learned about how to get my images large with minimal load time. The image is compressed to the amount that I could compress it without compromising the clarity.
Thanks, Lady. Everything I learned about listing auctions, I learned from Vendonians!
Roz -- The listing does show up in the US in the main crochet patterns category (under "other" .
