My computer has been rebooting on it's own. I know I have some kind of bug. Please post the link I need to fix it.

Thanks

If you do not have adaware or spybot...you may want to consider them..they are FREE and can be downloaded at www.download.com . These two programs will help "clean up" some junk on your computer that may be causing the trouble.

Toots:

That sure sounds like a VIRUS (Ralphie calls them BACTERIA, but, hey, what does HE know? HE'S A DOG!) to me...

I would do...

1) Run HOUSE-CALL here:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

You really can't do anything if yer Commodore64 is infested -- so CLEAN UP YER ACT first!

2) If yer CLEAN, then make sure yer WINDOZE 95 is UP-TO-DATE...visit Billy-Boy's place here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us

3) I like to scan my trusty TIMEX-SINCLAIR once a week here, just to make sure that feeBay or OTHERS (hint...hint) haven't dropped a load into my pc:

http://www.pcpitstop.com/default.asp

4) FINALLY...

To keep my PC's coat smooth & shiney with strong teeth & bones, I like SCOTTY the WONDER DOG to guard my home from invasions by CRAP-WARE / KAKA-WARE, etc:

http://www.winpatrol.com/news.html

Let Ralphie, et al, know what yer OS & BROWSER are if things continue to reside in the WC!

PS: Granny-Kevin ~ to make a clickable link here in VD-LAND, walk this way:

remove those pesky little starry doo-hickies, SVP!

hmmm. if you put "computer reboots itself" in Google you bring up a LOT of stuff.

I've read 3 pages of stuff already and nobody seems to have the solution that's cut and dried.

Mostly they say it points to a HARDWARE problem, like your CPU or FAN.

How old is your computer?

I keep seeing Fan Fan Fan by a lot of the people.

Is the back of your computer all dusty?

Is the fan running?

Mush-mind Ralph remembers a very famous VIRUS from 3-6mos ago that was causing PCs to constantly re-boot to the point where ya had to dis-connect the modem in order to get anything done -- but we can't remember the name of it because we both are...

GEEZERS!

Thanks Everyone for all your help.

My computer is about 4 years old. I'm running Windows 98 and IE 6.

I though I probably had a bug or virus because my Mom read something about it in the paper a few days ago. Something people having this same problem and thinking they needed a new computer when all they really needed to do was run Adaware. Of course, she threw the paper away before I could read it. Only I couldn't find the thread where everyone was talking about it here. I have had the flu for several days and still feel like crud so I didn't put too much effort into it either.

As for the fan, that is a possibility also. I admit I do have dust here and there. I was right in the middle of doing everything you all suggested and writing my little thank you note when it happened again. Only this time with a twist. The computer never actually went off. It was as though it was getting power surges and the monitor was doing all kinds of crazy things.

When I finally got it all turned off and stopped panicking I realized the battery backup was beeping. So, maybe that is where the problem is. I plugged the computer into a different outlet and so far there have been no problems. But I won't get my hopes up until it's been on for a couple of hours.

In the meantime, when I went into Outlook I couldn't open my files. The message says I'm not authorized in the properties. So, does anyone know what to do about that? I have a lot of e-mails and addresses in there that I really need.

Such as, I have a really cute gift for a little boy in JAX and now I don't have his address.

Thanks again everyone
Debbie

Tom, Thanks!!! Copied and pasted in my "How the heck do I do this" file.

Debbie,
Do you have any virus protection on your computer?

you'll probably have to run the detect and repair in outlook.

Open outlook (can you do that?) and it's under the HELP.

Debbie:

Do ya have OUTLOOK or OUTLOOK EXPRESS??

and...

Ralphie keeps yelping in my ear: "Am I dat liddle-boy?? Am I dat liddle-boy??"

And I gently respond: "Put a sock in it BRAT, or coal-lumps fer YOU this XMAS"

But, that is really kewly-keen of ye to be thinking of him at a time when yer PC is burping! Santa is shirley spoiling his pampered butkarskie this year!

Tom

I have Outlook and was able to get back all my much needed stuff.

However, a few months back I had to reformat my hard drive. I copied everything including my Outlook file onto a rewritable CD. Now the file will not open because it is read only. If I open that CD like I'm going to record on it but don't, will I be able to open that file?

Tell Ralphie to hold his horses for a few more days. Santa is on the way.
