don't have a clue Jack. it's been ages since I've had dialup.

seems like they suggested maybe a new phone line from your computer to the wall? or if somebody was trying to call then I would get bumped sometimes.

I'd call the phone company and have them come out and check your lines if getting a new line doesn't work. I used to roll over my cord in my chair and it would damage it but I didn't know it.

there's some tests you could run if you were on cable modem, but I'm not aware of any on dial up.

I know when I first got my laptop with XP and my desktop still had W98, I had to install XP on my desktop in order to upload pics to VD. And that STILL didn't fix it. I finally had to run those tests and lower my MTU or something like that.

hey as soon as I get rid of the stuff in my Ebay room, I'm quitting Ebay MOL and getting rid of that $40.00 a month bill with cable modem and going back to dial up myself.

It's so cheap now!

My computer has been doing the same thing for about 2 weeks. We have DSL and we are always on line, but now we keep getting a message for "dial up connection", and it has gone off-line. Sometimes we have to re-boot to get it back. I have no idea what is going on. I've done a virus scan-nothing. Run Spybot and Adaware, but no help.

now that one's easy. somehow your configs got changed.

start button/control panel/internet options/connections and choose "never dial a connection" meaning your dial up connection.

when your dsl or cable "burps" as it will...it will automatically try to "dial" the dialup connection.

HEY, don't laugh! Some of us still have dial-up and are happy with it!

Jack: Years ago, when we just had one computer, used by my husband only, if I picked up the phone to call someone (and of course right away heard that he was on-line), it would disconnect him from being on-line. It doesn't happen now, with two computers and two phone lines. Is somebody at your house picking up the receiver? Or a pet? A monkey? A cat? A gorilla? Better check.

it's the kitties I think. they've chewed the cable or calling HSN and ordering something while poor Jack is writing auctions!

you may have to download less pictures. dial up all depends on how many people are online and that varies.

install the brand spanking new out of the package from the dollar store phone line, not one of those stuck back in the drawer or closet. and if THAT doesn't work..

call your phone company and have them come out and check your power in your lines.

it amazed me when I call them to come out and tell me why my picture was so sucky on my tv and they'd change the cable out and it looked great then. same with the phone line.

Jack...I can tell you from personal experience that a cat nibbling on the phone cord can cause intermittent problems and unexplained disconnects. OTOH, when a Rottweiler gets ahold of the cord, there's nothing intermittent about it. You're down and out disconnected until you replace the cable and offer the Rottie something better to chew on. Sirloin steak is a good alternative. Also, make sure your cord goes directly from the modem to the wall outlet. Don't use any multiple line splitters.

It's common for disconnects on long downloads with dialup.
The computer/ISP thinks your doing nothing and disconnects

Set your E-mail to check it's self every minute then your ISP won't think the computer is setting idle.

Always have your E-mail program open when on.

Jack...Bundle up the computer and take it to a friend's house and try it on their phone line. If it works o.k. there, then the problem is in your phone line. If it does the same thing, then it's in your modem or cord. Replace the cord first. If that doesn't work, change out the modem.

Jack when we moved I had dial up and stayed with it but many problems. Called Voyager they said call SBC. Well SBC came out and check the lines and there was a break in two lines into the main line of our apartment building. Took 5 minutes to fix but I had a month of headaches trying to find out what to do. Just have whoever owns the telephone lines to come and check it.

Try uploading fewer images at a time. Also clear your Cache, and defragement your computer.

Forgot to add...Some isp's have a provision to automatically disconnect after a period of no activity. A download looks like inactivity to the computer. See if your software has a provision to turn that function off. AOL used to be bad about that in their earlier versions. After the download starts, minimize the window and open another and come over here and post or surf the web. See if it disconnects then.

Thanks for your help glassgrl, that has solved my problem.
I have a funny story about animals chewing through wires. When we were given our first old computer quite a few years ago, I knew absolutely nothing about them. My husband had to get someone in to help because he was having problems, and I heard the guy say that the problem was with the mouse. I was on the phone to my daughter at the time, so I told her that a mouse must have chewed through one of the wires, and that was why it wasn't working!
