My first negative, darn it. New-ish buyer, complaining about an item (and his complaint is incorrect, too), leaves my first neg without ever contacting me with his complaint. And I left +feedback when he paid. From now on, newbies don't get the feedback from me until they've left it. Period. Live and learn.

Right, live and learn, and good that you've learned. I use feedback as a defensive tool against receiving bad feedback, and not leaving it first can help a lot in that fight.
I leave Feedback when I ship and here are my feedback stats:
Feedback Score 7486
Positive Feedback: 99.9%
Members who left a positive: 7487
Members who left a negative: 6
All positive feedback received: 11117
12715 feedback left by neglus
I don't have time to mess with worrying about when to leave feedback or for answering emails about why I didn't leave feedback.
The first one does sting - especially when it isn't justified, but life goes on. There are more important things to do than to get caught up in feedback wars.
I don't leave negatives either. Filing for FVF gets the NPB off ebay soon enough.
I am fortunate to sell in a category with a low rate of NPB's though or I might change my philosophy a bit.

I don't mess with leaving feedback either, I purchased third party software to do it for me automatically. It saves me a lot of time as it is not unusual to receive 50 or more positives a day.

Suzy - I know it must hurt.
I leave FB when I receive it or an email saying everything is ok. I always send a nice letter with every item asking them to let me know when they receive the item and if they are pleased.
I still feel that the transaction is not over - until the bidder has received the item and is happy.
You can always get a unreasonable winner who can't read or is just plain nasty. If they leave undeserved bad FB - they should get it right back IMO
I have yet to get a negative but know it's coming some day.
