I have had this cell phone number for about 2 months. Brand new. Got a call today from someone asking for me by name and then started the schpeel about some credit card special deal. I hung up on them
So, this urban legend thing is really REAL! It happened to me this morning while I was at work with my own private cell phone with a newly listed cell phone number AND they asked for me by name! Wonder whose list I'm on now!

If I understand correctly the service that has the cell phones can now sell your numbers to telemarketers. That is the pits because now the cell phone owner has to pay for the calls.

The urban legend really is an urban legend. It got it's start when some of the major wireless providers announced that they were going to work together to create a wireless phone directory.
If you want to be a part of this directory you actually have to opt in to it. Your number will not automatically be included.
You can register your cell phone on the national Do Not Call List and rather than just hang up on anyone that does call, you should ask who they are calling on behalf of and then inform them that you would like your number put on their internal Do Not Call list. If they then call you again you can report them to authorities. Fines are hefty!!
With all that said, Libra is right. Unless you specifically state that your number is not to be sold, your provider can and will sell your number just like traditional phone companies do.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

If you want to register your number with the Do Not Call Registry, here is the link https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx
I put my cell # on a few weeks ago. I don't even give out my cell phone to some of my friends, so I sure as heck don't want to be bothered with telemarketers!

I did that a few weeks ago too. The site says it takes 3 months to take effect. I guess I get to suffer until around feb. or march
