this last friday a personal friend in new jersey went to a house sale the day before the sale and purchased a pile of goods, the house was infested with bugs, when he got home and went throgh all the boxes he discovered the money, and to make a long story short he returned all the moneythe following day, it belonged to a 82 year old man who was alive and his nephew and neice was running the sale
he got a 200.00 reward
My question is if he dint return the money they would have never know based on all the facts, what would you have done and please the truth???????

I would have returned it. Keeping it feels to much like stealing. If I had bought a rare widget for a few bucks I could sell for big money that would be business!

There is a guy in san fran back in the 90s who worked for a fast food restaurant and returned 40k to a customer who left it in the booth.
He was honored by the mayor, featured in newspaper and tv programs and offered a job to run his own ice cream franchise in the airport,he accepted the offer.

I've returned windfalls before. The highest amount was $9000+ around 20 years ago. At that time, my finances (and the value of $9k) made it not completely easy to do. However, beyond the obvious fact that it was the right thing to do (even if I gave it to a corporation that didn't need the money), my theory was that I would spend $1 of the ill-gotten gains on a slice of delicious NY pizza, and probably choke to death on it
Sleeping well at night is a very valuable thing. Sometimes it costs $9000

I think it is fantastic that he was so honest. I hope, if ever faced with a situation similar that I would be honorable enough to do the same thing. I am sure it was a hard decision but bet he sleeps better at night. I hope he got something from the sale that brings mega bucks.

If it had been an estate sale and the old man was dead, I might have kept it. Not much difference there than buying a thousand dollar first edition book at a garage sale for a nickel.
In this case, giving it back was the right thing to do. The old man probably needed the money.

If I found any money today I'd go out and pay my rent to void the eviction notice I got on Saturday and I would buy my daughter something for Chrsitmas so that when she wakes up Saturday morning there is something under the tree.
if I wasn't in this type of situation then maybe I'd return the money because that's the right thing to do.

I would have returned it also. I don't think I could enjoy anything that I bought with money that was not mine.
There was a story in Canada recently about a single mother on welfare who was crossing a street and saw money lying around. She got to the sidewalk and found a plastic bag with a large amount of money, can't remember the exact amount, around $27,000 I think. She saw a bank nearby, and for some reason thought it must be theirs, and handed it in to them. She has $2,000 reward. But when the press got hold of the story, things changed. Questions were asked about whether the money belonged to the bank, and so it was handed in to the police, who think it may be drug money. I guess if no-one claims it with 2 years, the finder gets it.

I think it was a wonderful thing for your friend to do, and at Christmas too. I honestly don't know what I would do, but I would like to think I would return the money. I have returned smaller amounts and felt very good about it, and the people were so surprised and pleased.

I would have returned it, but I would have had to call all my friends and show them first. But then, everyone around here knows I'm crazy.
20 years or so ago when I lived in Dallas, a couple walking down H. Hines Blvd found a black plastic bag containing $10K. Suspecting that it came from a drug deal and not wanting to wake up dead, they turned it over to the police. It made the evening news.
It was claimed the next day by the owner. Seems he had withdrawn his life savings from the bank. After placing it in the garbage bag, he threw the bag in the back of his pickup on his way home. Imagine his shock when he arrived home and found the bag had blown out the back of his truck!
Thanks to the honesty of strangers, the old fellow was not destitute.
On the other hand, when I was living on the west coast, a couple bought an antique upright piano at an estate sale. When they got it home, it sounded like heck, so they opened it and found $100K stuffed down in the sound board. They thought they had won the lottery.
However, they bragged about their find and the news got back to the family. The family asked for the money back and the couple declined. The family took them to court and a judge ordered that the money be returned.
Seems if you buy a piano, you are only buying a piano and not its contents.
I think though, that if you are buying a box of misc, that is a totally different story and you would have to follow your conscience.
I personally would not want anything that might give me nightmares or pangs of guilt in the future. And I certainly would not want to be the reason for someone else's hardship.

WWJD AND WHAT WOULD CHRIST ASK OF US? EASY QUESTION. A lot of the time it's very hard to be a Christian in this world ... especially when the gap between the have's and have mores (you know GWB's friends) and the rest of us has grown so large and continues to grow each day.... but $27,000 is not our final joy.
Merry Christmas to all.

I already gave my response to the original question.
But if we're changing the subject to talking about finding a bag of money on the street, it's MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Turn it in to the police or a local bank? Uh-huh. right.

And then there was that incident in Miami a few years ago. Armored car turned over and spilled cash all over the street. People started grabbing money left and right. Some where in there was a video camera taping the incident and the police hunted down quite a few of those people and prosecuted them for theft.

I would have returned it as well. I believe in Karma and keeping that money would have brought bad Karma. I don't need back luck knocking on my door.

It would be SO hard to return it, even though it's the right thing to do.
I think I would just give half the money back, ... then I would only go halfway to Hell.

This does remind me though, of a gal we heard about from around here a few years ago, that found thousand$ wrapped in towels, inside of an antique bathroom wooden cabinet that she'd took home (bought at an estate auction) ... They had told her she could have all the towels and linens inside. ... she returned all the money.

Reminds me of the time when I was a bank teller.
A rich cattle rancher brought in 7000 bux in 100 bills.
I counted it twice, but counted two extra bills.
It was a nightmare trying to balance out that night.
They called the guy but he said I never gave him back any money.
Scumbag.
