Miracle on 34th St is playing all day long on AMC. I havent seen it in years but am on my 3rd viewing right now. I am getting choked up as I havent seen a movie from it's era since.......the last time I saw it as a kid, 1970's in my grandmothers house. She is gone now and it seams like everything about the good old days are.

For some reason all I can think about is how the world has changed in so so so many ways, many for the worse. This movie demonstrates what we used to stand for, legend, common courtesy, value's, fantasy, respect, family, ect ect ect. Even though I came around about 20 after 1947, this old flick has dragged me through a time machine to a simpler, more happy way of life. I think I will turn this computer off for the day and soak up a few more episodes of Miracle on 34th St....

I'm about as old as you, and I agree to a point. However, don't let a movie fool you into it being a picture of reality. While I agree that there are many things that have changed for the worse, a lot of things have changed for the better. I'm sure if you are black and in Mississippi in 2004 you would not long for it to be 1947, you would certainly not long for the good old days when just saying a few wrong words could be a death sentence with no justice. People still killed each other and committed all sorts of crimes in 1947. As I said, some things changed for the worse, but some for the better. I could not imagine a world without ebay though. There are actually lots of things that are just so much more convenient these days, hard to imagine not having the internet to find anything out!

What I miss the most, I think, is common courtesy, manners (including table manners!), families eating the evening meal together, the ability to ride all over town on my bike as a little girl and not worry about strangers, the ability of small children to play in their own front yards without constant adult supervision.

Oh, and Christmas celebrations that aren't over the top, hyped as they are now--and our appreciation for the few gifts we got because we weren't flooded with "stuff" as children.

Don't you all remember hearing our parents and grandparents say the same thing. Nothing is like the good old days. Things are more complicated than they were 20 - 30 years ago but things have also improved. Would we all be online like this 20 years ago? I don't think so. Be thankful that atleast our parents instilled honesty, courtesy, manners, caring for others etc in us. Be doubly thankful that our kids are the same. Things like courtesy, honesty etc rub off on others as we and our kids display them.

Yes, things are different today than they were when we were young but thank god in many ways, it's gotten better.
