What is up with that?
I got an email this morning from a buyer who purchased one of my regular items. They weigh 1 oz in envelope to ship and I ship them 1st class. I use Endicia and have the stealth setting on.
She said when she received her item yesterday it arrived $3.48 postage due! I dont even charge that much to ship something! She said she paid it because she wanted the item and was really angry with me. I apologized profusely and promptly refunded her $3.48 through PayPal.
Did I do the right thing?
Why would that have happened? I've never ever had that happen before and I have mailed a lot of packages in all sorts of class ~ Priority, Media, Parcel, First...
I hope she's understanding and doesn't neg or neutral me.

Wrong thing to do in my opinion. First thing I would have done is ask her for proof of her claim. Sounds like that is something she would have been extrememly hard pressed to provide.

It just doesn't add up because even if they were postage due"ing" her for the amount to make it Priority Mail it still doesn't add up. $.62 + $3.48 doesn't equal $3.85 (unless I'm really REALLY bad at math).
She's a relative newbie so I dont' want her attacking my feedback for something I didn't do when she may not really know how the sytem works yet.
I still haven't heard back from her but then again this is Christmas and not everyone is sitting at their computers like me

This is an easy one.
Do the math. You didn't send it first class. You sent it priority and only paid for first class postage. $3.48 is the difference.

No I did not. I sent it 1st class. I just checked my Endicia Log and it was shipped First Class.
And $3.48 + $.62 is $4.00. Not $3.85 which is 1 pound Priority.

I wouldn't have sent a refund!
First, I would have your buyer mail you the envelope as proof, or at the very least a scan of the envelope.

If you sent it first class and used a tracking number the package needed to be 3/4" in some areas of the package if not then tracking is not allowed with first class.
This happened to me I sent a first class bubbled envelope and the customer was charged the difference between first and priority because I put tracking on first class that was not 3/4" deep.
So now when that happens I just roll some bubble inside the envelope to make it at least 3/4" so i can use tracking.

But I wonder why it happened on just this package and not the other 100 I've shipped that are exactly the same?
I use a bubble envelope to ship this particular item.

Helga,
You're an honest trusting soul. It isn't entirely unlikely that you just got ripped off for $3.48 by the buyer. If you did, the good news is that she's unlikely to neg you. If she does, make sure you neg back, with specific mention of postage due in the comment... might save some other seller the discount this buyer likes.
I'm not sure that she's full of nonsense, but it smells funny.
Merry Christmas.
BTW, I have kids, so I've known all along what your name referred to and liked it, even before you outed yourself

What if it had been about $348.00? Then would you Care about that silly feedback thing if YOU were in the RIGHT? I think NOT.....Once you get the FIRST one, after that, you won't care one way or the other. ONLY that you get PAID! That feed back is a bunch of BUNK! Some sellers have 100's,1000's of negs,,,,their just like the EVERYREADY Bunny, they just keep selling and selling and selling...All e bay cares about is commision, commision, commision.....

yea Jack-everything you said is true, which makes me wonder why people continue buying from these sellers that have 100's of negs.

Helga,
1 oz should only cost .37 cents. The $3.48 added to that comes to $3.85 which is 1 lb priority. Your shipment went Priority, whether you wanted it or not. Most likely because of DC on the under 3/4" envelope. Since your postage charge was stealth, the clerk assumed you paid 37 cents, and added enough to make up the difference, which was $3.48. Also, remember that this time of year you will not always be dealing with the regular clerks you are used to. Many times top management, supervisors, and even the Postmaster himself will be manning the windows to help move the volume. These are the people who are likely to catch the 3/4" thickness violation and nail you. Simply buy a roll of toilet paper and stuff enough in your future envelopes to make them 3/4" thick before you add DC.

One ounce shipping is .37 not .62
Your extra maybe the tracking, but that is not postage. The story given by your buyer is very believable simply because the math adds up.

1 oz shipping might be 60 cents (not 62 cents) if the envelope is oversized or too thick.

We ship items that are 2 oz. We use the PayPal postage service with delivery confirmation and had sent out hundreds the same way. One day I went to the PO with my shipper (husband) and asked them how they liked the prepaid labels and packages all done. She said nice but they are not 3/4" thick, but we are letting them slide through anyhow. The PO won't do dc on just a flat 1st class envelope. Now he is wrapping each item in bubble wrap to make the thickness but no negligble additional weight.

Could also be the item was tagged with the extra postage at the sorting facility. I read an article last week about the PO cracking down on over-sized shipments.
Seems local PO's are not always checking for over-sized dimensions, so the bulk mail facility is. Over-sized items without proper postage are being assessed the correct postage, which could mean a surprise for the recipient.
In your case, they may also be cracking down on the 3/4 thickness rules.

Well I was doing a little reading on the eBay boards about this too.
I'm going to start putting a packing peanut in my little envelope when I ship. It won't have an effect on the weight and it will be thick enough (even though I already think it is).
And I am charged through Endicia $.62 for a 1 ounce oversize envelope. I hate it when people insist it is one thing and I know it's another. I am not charged $.37, it's $.62.

It doesn't matter what endica charged you. That is completely irrelevant. Your oversized package didn't mean squat when it came down to priority shipping.

I dont understand why you are being such an a** about this.
I've shipped over 100 of these items, it never happened before. I know what I pay, I know what I pay on every single one of them that I've shipped. It's not $.37, it's $.62.
If this is what happened that's fine. I'll rectify the problem in future mailings. You don't have to continue to talk down to me like I dont know what I'm talking about.
You telling me it's only $.37 is wrong because that is not what I get charged and not what I pay. My Endicia logs tell me this in every single transaction I do.

Helga
I understand what you are talking about. You do pay $0.62. That is the postage plus DC.
I send 1 oz packages in a bubble envelope also. 99.99% of them go through without a hitch. But every now and then, some smarta** postal worker, usually on the other end, catches it and slaps on the postage due. At that point they charge you Priority. Sometimes they go with the $0.62 and sometimes they figure it on the $0.37. It all depends on the dummy doing the figuring.
Ralphie told me about the peanut awhile back.

I guess the $3.48 refund was okay ~ the buyer never emailed me back but did leave me positive feedback today so all's well with this one.
I will definitely make sure that doesn't happen again!
