On Christmas day, I pounced on all the bubble wrap and peanuts and put them in a box to bring home for packing and wrapping. Today I decided to put the peanuts into plasic bags. BIG MISTAKE! Within a few minutes, my hands were covered with green peanuts. I am out of Static Guard, and didn't know what to do. If I went within 6 inches of the box, they jumped out onto my hands, and I am walking around like some green peanut monster! It was funny at first, but I soon lost my sense of humor, I ended up washing them off, and cleaning up soggy peanuts from the sink!

An old Heloise hint about static cling was to rub a skirt hem with a sheet of fabric softener. I wonder if that would work for you, to just rub the sheet over the part of you that comes in closest contact with the peanuts.
I've never had that problem but I do sympathize. It sounds kind of funny but probably not to you.

I store my peanuts in a cardboard barrel and what I do is to spray the barrel once in a while with a diluted mix of nonscented fabric softener and water and then let it air dry. Seems to keep the little pink and white and green monsters at bay!

I rarely use peanuts for packing, so I'm not bothered by the static cling. One thing I did learn the hard way long ago is to make sure all the ceiling fans are turned off before you open that bag!

Isn't there some fantastic scene in Tom Wolfe's book, "Bonfire of The Vanities" in which the snooty main character gets his legs covered in packing peanuts as he's being handcuffed and taken to jail? The more the peanuts stick to his legs the more humiliated he becomes. Somehow the peanuts gave the guy his comeuppance even more than the handcuffs. Am I remembering this right?
Packing peanuts really do- kind of- put a person in his place, don't they?

Sparkz: And also, never open a bag of peanuts outdoors in the slightest of breezes! I learned that one the very hard way.

Roadsmith,
When my son was 9 and my daughter was 4, I had ordered a piece of radio equipment and it came in a big box packed in a lot of peanuts. We had an oscillating fan in the living room. When I wasn't looking, they devised a game called "Blizzard". You guessed it. Took forever to clean up the mess. Now, I'm just waiting till they have kids of their own. I have a great big plastic bag of peanuts that will make a perfect fourth birthday gift

Some good suggestions. I should have thought about the fabric sheets, I always rub my cat down with them before brushing him because I give him shocks all the time. The barrel wouldn't work, living in a very small apartment, I always have to try and save space. Putting them in bags means they will go under the bed. I felt like something out of a horror movie, "The attack of the green peanuts!"

Funny story, sparkz. I suggest that, along with the gift of a bag of peanuts, you include an instruction manual and a fan.

I have a 20 year old cat, long-haired, who decided to get kittenish one day and walk around the top of the open peanut storage box. She lost her balance, fell in, peanuts flying everywhere. I thought I'd die laughing when she emerged from the depths of that box, covered with peanuts and trying desparately to shake them off as she sprinted for the door! I hadn't seen her THAT active in years! She avoids that box very carefully now...

I have used hair spray to control the static on peanuts. I put them in a 39 gallon garbage bag that I had sprayed the inside and the outside with a light mist of hairspray. It seemed to work pretty good. Just a light spray, not so much that you could glue the peanuts together.
