is anyone besides me appalled that eBay hasn't provided a means yet to list auction or store items with part or all of the proceeds going for tsunami relief? i remember that this all happened quite rapidly following 9/11. about 3,000 people were lost then. now we have a situation in which - at last count - 73,000 lives have been lost. many concerned sellers, such as myself, do not have a way to easily list charity items on eBay, despite the fact that we'd be more than happy to donate for tsunami relief. the american red cross doesn't appear to be a charity listed at missionfish.org, eBay's official charity listing site.

how are others handling this and finding ways to donate? thanks

I'm not in the least bit appaled. But then that is because I read the message in My Ebay and on the announcement board yesterday that explains that they done done those things.

**Tsunami Crisis***
Date: 12/28/04    Time: 02:23:10 PM PSD

As part of the global community, we are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and suffering that are occurring as a result of Sunday’s massive earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean. As the situation unfolds and the need for humanitarian aid increases, many of us as individuals are looking for ways we can contribute to relief efforts.

On behalf of eBay and PayPal, the eBay Foundation will be making a contribution to help with the relief efforts in Asia, and we are investigating other ways to help as more information becomes available and the needs of those affected become more clear. eBay’s Giving Works team is compiling a list of charities that have established special initiatives to collect funds for this effort that we will share in the next several days.

Today, many humanitarian organizations associated with this type of relief work are represented in listings offered on the eBay Giving Works site and in the MissionFish Directory. We encourage those interested to investigate those listings for opportunities to give -- either via selling on behalf of a chosen charity, bidding or buying a listing that contributes all or a percentage to the charity of choice, or through direct donations via the organization’s website.

In addition, a dedicated Tsunami Crisis Discussion Board has been set up for eBay members worldwide to share their thoughts, as well as non-profits they know of that have established Asia Relief funds. As these efforts continue, we will keep you posted with our progress.

Our hearts and good thoughts go out to all of those impacted by these events.

I work with over 100 children on a weekly basis ranging in ages from 3 to 18. We talked today at work about doing some sort of fundraiser to benefit the tsunami relief. We decided we are going to just do donations. Each family has been asked to bring in a donation of at least $5 (but no limit on the amount) and we will then take that total and send it to Unicef http://www.unicef.com on behalf of our organizations name. We thought of sending actual physycal goods (water, bandages, etc) but decided this would be a better way.

I'm surprised too that eBay has not done something like Auctions for America yet.

I was even more surprised to read people on the eBay boards complaining that no one really cared this much about the people in Flordia this summer in the hurricanes. I dont think this is anything like that. The hurricanes were bad but the tsunamis have obliterated entire villages - thousands and thousands of children, babies - entire families. The evolvement of this entire disaster has been very overwhelming.

fenix,

there is really nothing "concrete" in what eBay says at their web site. i read the same drivel you did. "auction for america" was a great idea - hopefully, eBay will implement something akin to it for this much larger human tragedy. hopefully, others who read this thread will not be as callous as you are and will consider donating auction proceeds or a donation to an applicable charity.

Hey CC - Shove your self righteous assumptions up your ass* dearheart. You don't know a damn thing about me or what I do.

All I did was point out that your indictment of eBay was without cause since they had already started their ball rolling a day and a half before you decided to call them to the carpet without bothering to read their announcements.

Nitpick and critcize? You called me callous and uncaring because I dared to point out that YOUR criticisms were without cause and now I am some type of evil person for telling you exactly what I though of your uncalled for and baseless personal attack?

It probably is best for you to go ahead and put me on ignore. Frankness and honesty seem to be traits you have a problem with so I can understand your need to be protected from them at all costs.

Remember the old "trick or Treat for unicef"? Well, they started that up again. My son, who felt he was too old to go trick or treating, did go out with his little box. He ended up with a tidy sum. I added a little bit more to it and we sent off a check to UNICEF. I am so proud of him. (GRIN)
