- when you could relist an unsold item for free (listing fee refunded if item sold).
- when Buy It Now was free.
- when new sellers were given $10 in listing fee credit.
- when there was a chance of having a Free Listing Day at the end of the year.

Yeah...and PayPal was free too! And then we all started using it and that's when the fees started.

I also started selling on eBay in 1998. The first item I sold was a #3 Stanley Plane for $135.00 Those same planes today sell for under $25.00 Also sold an odd adjustable wrench for over $500.00 I won one of those wrenches this year for $49.99

Yes I remember those days!! It's pretty bad when the good ole days were not that long ago. I started on ebay in 99. Vendio was Auction Watch I think and was free too. I could sell my son's used jeans for 7 to 15 back then, now unless they are branded with lucky or tommy hilfiger they are practically not worth listing. I started going to auctions to buy antiques so I could make extra money(that was my only interest in antiques or collectibles). I would buy a blazer load full for about 70.00 and come home and list. Then the unthinkable happened...I started experiencing SELLERS remorse, it all started with 2 glass creamers I sold on ebay, paid 4.00 and made 40.00 and I regretted letting them go. But I kept going to auctions so I could "make extra money". I still brought home blazer loads of stuff but would only list about 10% of it. It didn't matter what it was, if it was old I had a new respect for it. Now I have a house and two sheds full of stuff and I try to stay away from the auctions. I guess that will be my kids inheiritance.

That's right, AuctionWatch was free (and I believe Andale was free and called something else - does anyone remember what Andale was called at the beginning?). I also started selling on eBay the beginning of 1998 and had 100% sell through about 99.9% of the time. It was GREAT!!! I once sold a book for $650 on eBay that is now going for about $50. My how things have changed.
Back then you could also go to auctions and fill up a van for around $200, now you can fill up a small box for well over $200. I quit going to auctions about three years ago and only hit yard sales or do house calls. I've saved lots of money that way and don't get caught up in bidding wars like I did at auctions. Plus we go out of state a lot to get away from the regulars we see at yard sales in town. It isn't nearly as fun as it used to be, but as long as I'm still making a profit, it's a great hobby that actually generates $$$. And my husband loves to hit the yard sales. I got him hooked so now he's the one that gets up at 5:30 in the a.m. and I'm the one who does the listing and paperwork, he does most of the buying and does all my packing! What a combination. Of course you can't sell everything on eBay, so I have my own shop in downtown and also we're set up in a group shop where we can sell the junkie stuff. Works out very well.
So as long as we're still having fun at it, we'll keep on keeping on...

Been around since 1999. When I first started selling on eBay, I had more stock (antiques) than I knew what to do with. Over the years, my stock was depleted, my ability to replace it at a reasonable price has diminished, and the eBay value has decreased considerably. I've been listing items that I used to laugh at other people for buying, and lord only knows what I'll be selling next year. It's always an adventure!
Happy New Year

I remember those days! When Pay Pal was NOT part of ebay. When you could be choosy and really find a bargain. I also used to go to country auctions and be able to leave with 2 or 3 pickup loads of stuff and not have spent $100. (The auctioneer used to call me Dollar because that was all I would bid.) I didn't sell on ebay in those days because I was spending 10 to 12 hours per day in my store selling and didn't have time. Boy has that changed! Now the store is closed because it doesn't make enough to pay the heat and lights.
Oh well, It will be interesting to see what happens in the New Year!!

I've been on ebay since 1999 and there was......
No Fee for reserve auctions!!!!
There was no BIN!!!!
There was only 7 day listings!!!
There was no ebay store!!!!!
You could go to a garage sale without somebody saying "That sells for $40 on THE EBAY"

Had to sign-in for this one!! I started Jan. 25, 1999. Almost everything I put up for auction sold. And yes, people did pay for merchandise. Those were the days..
Once upon a time there was a tavern (an EBAY)
Where we used to raise a glass (PRICE) or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing (SELL)and dance forever and a day
We'd live (SELL) the life (THINGS)we choose
We'd fight (SELL)and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days....

Ooops. Your memory isn't very good on that one. I started in 1999 as well and back then, you could list for 14 days. Then in 2000, they dropped it down to 10 days, but still for no additional charge. It was that way for a couple of years, then the greed really began to surface.

replaymedia,
" "when you could relist an unsold item for free (listing fee refunded if item sold)."
This is not still true?"
It is true only under the following condition:
If your listing ends without a winning buyer or results in an Unpaid Item (UPI), you may qualify for a credit by relisting the item. If the item sells the second time, eBay will refund the Insertion Fee for the relisting.

There is a flip side to "The Good Old Days" however. Ebay had constant outages - some times for hours and days at a time and you could count on it on Sundays when the traffic in listings increased. Your listing could take 5 hours or more to appear in search after you launched it. They had no photo hosting of their own and most people signed up with AOL to take advantage of the free hosting since one of the Ebay's recommended sites for hosting called "Pixhost" charged .25 for each photo and you had to type in there HTML in the browser bar. Then Auctionwatch - now Vendio appeared and offered to do it for free. They too had problems and sometimes your photos would not appear - usually the last day of the auction.

sthoemke, I'm afraid I still don't see the difference.
I remember before BIN came along.
I remember before Fixed Price
I certainly remember when stores were new (not that long ago!)
I DON'T remember 7 day only or 14 day. I do know YAHOO offers 14 day auctions. I didn't kow eBay ever did.
I also remember when Blackthorn software had the best solution for posting to eBay. I bought the stupid thing for $200 a couple months before eBay bought them out.

I believe that would be honesty.com. Today it goes to Andale if you type honesty.com into your browser. I actually remember using Honesty counters for a while.

I have been on since 1997. I remember when you could only list a certain number of items (can't remember the exact number) in an hour and then you had to wait for the next hour to list more.

I got started (buying) with auctions back in the days of ONSALE.com, long before eBay was even heard of. My first foray in the confusin world of eBay was back in 1997.
Or, as eBay puts it:
"Member since: Oct-30-97
Location: United States"
My own e-commerce website was started back in 1995, before either eBay or Amazon was even conceived of by their founders. I'm a pioneer, and you can tell it from the arrows in my back.
Actually, I sold stuff from my Wildcat! BBS way back from 1992...
But I digress... Who here remembers ONSALE? The original I mean, not the one that was bought out by egghead, who was bought out by someone else, who was bought out by Amazon.
