To make this post eBay related I'm having a heckuva time listing, buying and searching on eBay because my computer is being slowed down by spyware.
Upon the advice of others the other day I downloaded Spybot and ran it, finding several things that Adaware (which I run daily) did not find. I shut my computer down and tried to run it the following day. An error came up and it would not completely load. I thought perhaps I installed it wrong (eh, who knows) uninstalled it and RE installed it. It ran fine and again located a couple of things that Adaware did not.
Now again the same thing has happened. I dont know if I'm downloading it from a sight that I shouldn't be or something but I can't uninstall and install it every time I want to run it.
Is there a good alternative to Spybot that I can use in addition to adaware?

what version are you using? go to help/about when you have it open. Mine says 1.3
what does the error say?
I really like Spybot since they've improved it, it runs much faster than it used to.
This one found a couple of things that adaware and spybot didn't find.
http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php
before you download anything other than these, check it against this list...
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#top
you could go bleepingcomputer.com and post your hijack this log and they could scan it for you.
you can use this to analyze your own hijackthis log if you're savvy....

Hey Glassgrl
I can't get it to reopen again. I'd have to uninstall it and download it again and then reinstall it to find out what version it is.
Is hijackthis something I should be downloading and running? I don't have that at this point.

Just ran that spywareinfo (very cool!) and it didn't find anything (which is good). But there is somethign on this computer because it's SO FREAKING SLOW. This is the computer my dad pitched a fit over months ago and then let me use. It ran fine then and it was only about 2 months ago so it should be fine now. But there is something on it and I can't seem to get rid of it running adaware.

I tried to run that housecall the other day and it also did not work then.
It says the upload was unsuccessful and something about a busy server being the possible problem.
It asks if I want to retry and when I click yes it still does not work.
someone suggested the other day that I try that and it did not work then either.

What Anti-Virus SW do you have on yer PC?
Is it UP-TO-DATE with Virus Definitions?
Can you RUN it??
TRY the PC PIT-STOP Full Scan...if you can RUN it, it will list ALL proggies running on yer PC -- COPY&PASTE them...
Methinks you may need a PC DOCTOR (BestBuy; COMP-USA; etc...)

You should have some sort of ability to check when the VIRUS DEFINITIONS were last updated -- I always check before doing a FULL-SCAN & d/l the newest if Norton hasn't done so automatically
Do you RENEW yearly with CA??
I know nothing about CA's AV SW -- but if yer virus definitions aren't updated regularly, then yer AV SW is 100% WORTHLESS!
I've met many folks who have NO IDEA that there is such an animal as SUBSCRIPTIONS for V-DEFINITIONS!
One guy I know hadn't updated his MACAFFEE in THREE YEARS!

How about just doing a clean install of Windows? Nothing like giving your PC a complete "flush" once a year.
If your system is mostly working, now would be the perfect time to start backing up your required files and data.
Unfortunately, sometimes you just hit a point of "there's no fixing it" with software glitches.

actually spysweeper has good reviews, I checked into last year when sanmar said he bought it. I downloaded the trial version today and it found 5 things on my laptop that none of the other did. it was very easy to run and I would probably highly recommend it to my non-techy friends and family that just don't know about spyware. I will run it on my desktop in a little while and see what turns up.
btw I do use WebRoots Window Washer and it is fabulous! Try it out for yourself.

I run Win98 on an old HP Pavilion that was given to me. I sit behind two firewalls, one with my dazzling speed Comcast ISP and the other with my Belkin router. I do not subscribe to any anti-virus, because I don't believe in letting a profession profit from a problem the same profession has created; thus I use free A-V scans. I also try not to visit any site that others have any angst with. I.E.: porn sites, Arab sites, and Jewish sites for example.
I run Adaware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ on an almost daily basis.
I run two different free A-V scans http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ and http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp on about a twice a week basis. Thanks to Tom I've added http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml to my list, even though I've got to open it in IE. BTW, I am a BIG Mozilla fan http://www.mozilla.org/9.
I don't care for Spybot as their updates are too infrequent for my liking. I cannot get Hijack this to run, maybe because of my OS platform. PC Pitstop http://www.pcpitstop.com/ is great for what it does. Pay attention to it's recommendations.
With all of this, my computer has been slower recently and my system resource percentage reduced. I suspected undetected spyware, but could not root it out and was too busy with the holidays to spend a lot of time on the problem. I just ran http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php as recommended by Glassgrl and it detected two NASTY spyware bugs! Thanks, and a tip of the New Year hat to Glassgrl for that GREAT scan! I'm pleased as spiked punch! My computer is now faster and may not lockup on some downloads, now. I also ran Registry First Aid 3.4 recently http://www.soft32.com/download_8879.html and cleared over 380 dead-ends out of my registry. This is a one-day free use program, unless you want to pay $21.00 for the program. I tried, but their snotty card processor rejected my card (address probably didn't match perfectly).
Another interesting site is http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#top for info on spyware.
Anyway, that's my two cents worth. And hugs and kisses to Glassgrl. That? Oh, don't worry I'm just happy to see you.
edited to add:
Just tried Webroot Window Washer http://www.webroot.com/products/windowwasher/ and it says it cleared up 120 MB of storage space for me. Zowie and a wag of the tail, Glassgrl!

Let me tell ya, Tom, it can get ugly. I've been fighting incipient OCD all my life. I've had to resist slipping into daily rituals and ruts all my life. I use to scare my mother because I could sit for hours entertaining myself by humming the same tone over and over and gyrating. She could tell me to be a rock and I would .... stay. I had to be convinced that I couldn't fly.
I had a ritual of eating breakfast and getting up and practicing words with my pegboard desk. I did it everyday. I did it so consistently that it irritated my mother. Everyday the same TV show and the pegboard desk, she learned to use that time wisely. One day I decided to tear that pegboard desk apart and hide it behind the couch and make an airplane out of it. I knew that if I just attached one leg as a propeller and closed my eyes and concentrated real hard, I would fly! I was three and probably had had that pegboard desk for a year and a half, got it for my second birthday. I sat on my airplane and concentrated real hard. Suddenly there was an explosion! My eyes popped open and I peered over the back of the couch and saw an incredible cloud of dust and my brother was laying on the floor moaning right where my pegboard desk always sat, had to sit. My mother ran into the room, screamed my name; and picked my 12 year old brother off the floor and threw him on the couch, looking for me. When she screamed my name I immediately said, "What?"
She looked at me, now behind my brother laying on the couch, and started crying. He had been up in the attic, I believe it was to look for a cat's hidden kittens, and had slipped off of the joist and fallen thorough the ceiling. He lived, and I got ice cream, it was a good day with excitement.
I never told anybody about the voice that convinced me I could fly if I only hid and built this plane right now and wished real hard to make it so. Mom was happy with me for once and I already had the wisdom to leave it at that. I got another desk, which lessened my distress about my desk, and, mom never knew, being lied to about the flying desk wish.
True story.

For sure. With a strong bent towards statistics, numbers, and groups. Randomness is fascinating. I've learned not to win too much, the house gets angry. I win at blackjack just so I can put it back in the slots and watch the wheels spin. Or have at times. Now, with the electronic slots it's possible to just charm them and play.........

I LOVE the idea of the Flying Desk!! Great visual picture parklane!
Helga I've thought of two other things for you. One - go to your computer (desktop icon or under start etc) and right click on the "C" drive and properties. How much free space does it say you have? Unless you're showing about half your computer will run slow. RAM is cheap and easily installed and will make your computer faster. You can do it yourself, it's just sticking a board into a slot. I did my own.
The only thing about using a computer for auctions and pics is that .jpegs take up a lot of room!!
The other thing is I noticed the same thing on my laptop...it just kept getting slower and slower. I was about to buy a new wireless card when for some reason I unistalled my driver and reinstalled a new one - and then, maybe because they had an upgraded one that was newer than the software that it shipped with - it ran just like new again.
WARNING! You do NOT want to do this unless you a) have the software to reinstall it OR b) save a new improved driver to your desktop OR c) have another computer handy that you can download it from.

Well I am just about fit to be tied.
I got SpyBot to run. It continues to detect, even after I remove it, the same 2 Spywares over and over and over. Adaware does not detect those ones but every day finds at least 10 new ones.
I ran the disk defrag last night. WOWEE that took a long time. I had no idea it would take that long to run but did that.
I cleared my cache, cleared my history, deleted my cookies.
and you know what? This stupid thing is still running so freaking slow I want to cry. I can't get anything done. I remember what a PITA it was when I moved from the old computer to this one, I lost all my Dazzle information (I reinstalled but lost all the tracking information I had, etc) and the other stuff I finally got put on this one.
I could do a system reinstall but I assume this will just happen again.
I want a new computer. A real one. Not a hand me down or one that is 3, 4 5 years old. Grrr.
My hard drive space is only 1/4 taken up. I have 3/4 of my hard drive available.

Helga, a software re-install might not be such a bad idea. I have heard several times this week about a virus that will not allow you to run spyware detecting software. You may have it.
Sorry, I don't know the name of the virus, but I was just on the phone yesterday with a tech from my cable company and she mentioned it again. I was talking to her because I think someone tapped into my wireless router for a few hours yesterday! Now I have that firewall up and running. Lesson earned.
For all you techy minded people on the board, I have a question. Is there REALLY a virus that can cause complete system meltdown?? Tech support yesterday told me there is a bug out there that wipes your system so bad that even a tech guru can not reinstall the software. I find this hard to believe. How can a virus wipe out your sytem to the point that you can not format and re-install software?

Call your cable company first!
I'm still running my desktop that is a 486? 432 MHZ processor. Pentium 1 if that! So it's not your computer!!
It could be you have a bad connection or your wiring is bad. (I know you have cable modem from talking with you in the past). I would call them and tell them this is the SECOND computer you've had this problem with and make them come out there and take a look at it. You might have to call 3 or more times to get it fixed. When we lived in the condo and got ours hooked up I must have had to call 5 times before I finally got somebody out there that knew what they were doing...and HE fixed it. I couldn't stay connected and it was slow! So call them first and keep calling until you know that that's not the problem.
Try unhooking your computer from the cable and hooking it into your phone line. You can get a free NetZero account (with popups but hey WTH it's FREE 250 minutes a month) and log on with that and see if it's just as slow.
Try downloading the HijackThis and running it through that other program up there that I sent you - or email me the log results to: [email protected]
Don't give up and don't cuss your computer like Jack does Things only break when you cuss them!
