I put the weight of the parcel in the auction and gave 3 options(priority, parcel post and ups) for shipping, customer chose ups. ebay said charges would be 7.12 so I take parcel down to ups store and they say 9.48. What gives here?

This is why I hate the shipping calculator on ebay so much. It is way off both ways. Too low on some figure and too high on others. It is never the same twice. I just have people e-mail me so I can figure it properly.

$7.12 is the correct charge, and that's how much it would have cost you if you had taken it to UPS. You took it to the UPS store, which is not the same thing regardless of what their advertising campaign would have you believe, and they charged you $9.48. Someone has to pay the gas, lights, rent and salaries for those convenient strip mall shipping points. Guess who paid?

I don't give a choice either, USPS is convenient for me, and they furnish supplies. As long as you're up front about it, customer will go along with your choice of shipping methods. On heavier items I offer choice of Priority or Parcel Post. For the little difference in cost, most opt for Priority.
