Weather service is predicting the strongest winds yet, since we moved to So. Calif. 3 years ago--70 mph--with up to 5 inches of rain in our mountains. Yikes. Better half is out putting bricks on tarps to weigh them down, etc. With the beetle-dead pine trees still standing, winds like that are very scary.

Oh Yeah, Just watched the local weather, will have winds up to 60 mph with up to 15 inches of rain in the Mtns. About 3 to 5 on the coast. This is like 1995 when El Nono hit. Oh well, what the hellz can we do about it? Just brought up Weather Channel on the internet Friday, 90 % chance of rain. Saturday. 100% chance of rain, Sunday, 40 % chance of showers.

We have a high wind warning tonight here in the south end of the valley. Predicted gusts of 85 mph between Bakersfield and the ridge route. This will effectively prevent any trucks, campers or motorhomes from going to or coming from the valley. This will also likely cause delays in parcel Post, FedEx Ground and UPS shipments. On the bright side, if we all open our front and back doors, we won't have to vacuum for about a week

The area where Sanmar and I live is under a flood watch from 8:00 tonight until Sunday afternoon. The risk of mudslide damage will mostly be for the burn areas north of Santa Barbara but still rainfall totals for the weekend are 3-6 inches for coastal and valley areas. Rain rates during the peak of the storm could exceed 1" per hour. In SLO, wind is expected to be in the 25-30mph range with gusts to 40. We could get a slide or two up here.
He and I are both in very safe, well-protected areas. I don't anticipate any difficulties for either of us unless, that is, we just can't stay away from Sunday's auction in Santa Margarita! www.smab.com

HI All,
I live in South Huntington Beach on an old marsh, 3/4 mile from the beach. Under normal conditions, the rain will just puddle in the street except when we have some serious rain as forecasted for this weekend. Back in 1982, it rained so much that the yard couldn't drain fast enough where it came into the house thru the patio door so now we have sand bags ready. Caltrans generally shuts down Pacific Coast Hway in Huntington Beach since part of it is below sea level and it always floods. Plus it floods the small town of Sunset Beach up the coast hway which is right on the ocean.

Lucy...About 2 hours after it hits you, we will get it here. We're expecting about an inch of rain during the night. NWS is predicting about 3 feet of new snow for the mountains. It's easy to spot the farmers and skiers around here. They're the ones with the ear to ear grins.

Sparkz--your suggestion about opening the doors so we don't have to vacuum reminds me of something. When we lived in Las Vegas, 1960 - 1980, a flash flood came through our neighborhood, hitting the back yard of our friends across the street first and building up a lot of water. She just opened her back door, opened her front door, let the flood wash through, and then got new carpeting. I thought that took a lot of moxie.

Roadsmith...That's what ya gotta do when you live in a city with no storm drains. The city figures it's more cost effective to clean up a muddy mess once every ten years than it is to install and maintain storm drains. And this year is the 10th year. They had some pretty good flooding there last week. With this series of storms (yes, there's more than one) approaching, they're gonna have to break out the rowboats again this weekend.

yeah, I'm in san mateo county, near san francisco, on a hill facing the ocean. I think I am going to be slipping and sliding more than I already am. We have puddles of mud. Oh fun!

Well, I don't have a view of the ocean, I do have a view of the peninsula and SF, Oaland etc. I live in one of those weird areas where anything that comes into the bay area from the ocean, comes by here first. Kind of like a dip in the mountain ranges. Kind of hard to explain.
We are having rain as I type. Oh my! I have to work in this stuff today. Where is the rain gear!

I live an hour inland from the Monterey Bay and it is nasty here at 9:21am. Storm woke me up about 2:00am last night with rain & wind. Weather man said that we were to get wind to 70mph. The last storm we had gust up to 50 mph and neighbors lost trees, roofs, etc. I wish I didn't have to go out today but I do. I was in Southern California on Monday when they shut the grapevine down(I-5). Not fun.

It's nasty! I had part of my fence blow down. The wind was coming out of the south and it was a gust of about 70 mph. The wind here usually blows from the northwest.
The authorities are absolutely scampering to keep up with the road hazards.

Parklane,
I felt that wind. I was in a shopping center parking lot and almost lost my hat. By the way, if you find a sign in your yard that says "Welcome to Visalia", we want it back.

OH, I was out working in that stuff today. Geez, try carrying computers in the rain, oh, so much fun! I came home and part of my awning is just hanging and broken, there are a couple of it's legs that came off of their cement posts. I think it was trying to take flight while I was gone. Atleast it is semi calm right now. It's supposed to be like this 'til tomorrow sometime. We'll we are as ready as we can be.

Ex-Californian here.
Sorry to hear about the problems some of you are experiencing. Guess with all this rain you'll no longer be considered in a 'drought' stage. I read these continuing storms have taken three states out of that catagory too.
The water coming in one door and going out another must be more common than I thought. A friend of mine, who lived in Santa Rosa at the time, had the same experience. She said she did the same thing...opened the front and back doors. She still almost cries at the thought of her clean-up after all had settled down though. Mud...mud...mud. She was only home with a new baby for three days when this happened.....years and years ago.
Good luck to all of you and I hope it settles down soon.

Oh Classic,
Don't say that. After that 9.0 earthquake that created that deadly Tsunami, that is the hot topic of conversation on my cul-de-sac. Since we live 3/4 mile from the beach, it would have a clear path up this 4 lane street quite near my home. Along that path, the wave would of course encounter the Edison plant across from the beach. Of course, it we ever experience a 7-9 earthquake, the city of Huntington Beach already have sent out letters to residents who live on old marsh land to prepare for the liquifation problem. So either way, we would get it.
I'll just bury my head in the sand for now thank you.

It's been a beautiful storm here in Central Calif. Where it's coming ashore on the coast, it's dumping some pretty heavy rain. One spot east of SLO got 5 inches. But when it hits the coast range, it breaks up and shotguns all over the central valley. Steady rain evenly distributed and not heavy enough to cause major flooding in any one area. Just the ticket for drought relief. The best part is when it hits the Sierra Nevadas as snow. They're predicting 5 feet of new snow from this current storm. No major wind events today, but the saturated ground has caused a few trees to fall on power lines resulting in scattered outages. The bad part comes at the end of the week when the storms all move out. Dense fog is expected to set in.
